We are saddened by the passing of Montgomery County Alabama Commission Chairman Elton Dean. Chairman Dean was a longstanding friend of The Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr. Institute from its inception.

It is with extreme sadness that the Montgomery County Commission advises you of the death of our beloved and admired friend and colleague, Elton N. Dean, Sr.

Chairman Dean had been ill for several months and passed away peacefully with his family at his side. Our hearts go out to Dean's immediate and extended family during this difficult time, and we ask that you please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

"Elton was more than a Commissioner; he was like a big brother to us all. We looked to him for his insight as a leader and his words of wisdom," says Commission vice-chairman Doug Singleton. "I will always treasure our endless discussions about his love for his county and baseball," said Singleton.

Dean was first elected to the Commission in November 2000 and was re-elected by his constituents for the next five election cycles, serving as a County Commissioner for a total of 22 years. He was elected vice chairman at the Commission's organizational meeting in November 2004 and named chairman in 2009, a role he served passionately and tirelessly until his recent illness.

FMJ Institute: Interview with J. Mason Davis, Jr. for Law Day 2022.

Help us celebrate Law Day 2022!

How has the U.S. Constitution changed, and what does it mean for those who live in our country? To find out, the Johnson Institute went to an expert, J. Mason Davis, Jr., to discuss the 2022 Law Day theme, “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.”

Davis, now retired, spent his career as an attorney in Birmingham Alabama. “He was involved in some of the most significant controversies in the civil rights struggle. As the attorney for a number of students who participated in the widely publicized Huntsville lunch counter sit-ins in 1961 and 1962, Davis played a key role in the desegregation of Alabama. In recognition of his conspicuous contributions in advancing racial reconciliation, his family was pictured on Time magazine's cover in 1974,” as his bio with Dentons Sirote states.

This interview, conducted by a middle school social studies teacher, Brittany Hamner of Erwin Middle School of Center Point, Alabama and Teach For America, is geared to middle and high school students.

Over recent months, the Johnson Institute has been fortunate to collaborate with Booker T. Washington Magnet High School's Center for Law program. Today, we were honored to participate in their virtual celebration where seniors shared their thesis project presentations, highlighting the program's complex content, the impressive students who participated, and the passion and expertise of its leadership. We look forward to seeing what these soon-to-be graduates accomplish in their promising futures!

Earlier today, the Johnson Institute staff was honored to attend the Freedom Rides Museum's commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Freedom Rides. The speakers brought to life the history and memories that made the Freedom Riders' courageous acts so significant in our nation's history, and led us with calls to keep up the "good trouble."

To the Freedom Rides Museum, our physical neighbors and colleagues in this great work, thank you for including us in this moving event today!

(Check out the the Freedom Rides Museum for more details on the event, including the debut of the restored vintage greyhound bus.)
