WBTV's Molly Grantham

Waited a few hours to process today’s headline.

- Yes, this is a cut-throat big-money industry.
- Yes, it ultimately demands wins.
- And yes, the timing surprised everyone.

But I don’t like it. I get that it’s “business,” but the announcement is a gut punch.

Ron and Stephanie Rivera entered this community in 2011 with zero pretense and open ears. They jumped into charity after charity, doing things sometimes with splash – only because their presence created it – and more often with an anonymous whisper. I’ll never forget a couple years ago how a wheelchair-bound child needed a piece of expensive equipment that had been stolen. I had done a story about how he'd lost his freedom.

Coach reached out. Quietly. He and Stephanie put a check in the mail and got it taken care of, but only on the condition I’d keep their names out of it.

This is actually the first time I've ever told anyone that story. I only give bits and pieces tonight because it speaks volumes as to the Riveras as a family.

So to both Coach Ron and Stephanie, thank you for your dedication to pancreatic cancer in Mickey’s memory, to veterans, to Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte ("Coach Rivera's Bowl-a-Palooza will be missed), and of course, to the many animals you fight for. Just to name a few of your causes. You guys have affected our community.

Tonight at 11p, we’re going to talk about the good the Riveras have done. We’ll also address next steps for the Carolina Panthers, David Tepper’s comments and more on the interim coach. But I think it's important to take a moment and reflect on the nine seasons Ron and Stephanie have been in Charlotte working for their team on the field, while rooting for our city when off it.

See you at 11p.

-Molly
