At the NJAEYC Leadership Institute, Meghan Tavormina, NJAEYC Director of Public Policy and Co-Chair of Start Strong NJ, joined Susan Dannemiller for a powerful session: From Story to Strategy: Turning Lived Experience into Policy Power.

Their conversation reminded us that advocacy does not only begin in policy rooms; it begins in classrooms, centers, programs, and communities, with the educators, directors, providers, and families who live this work every day.

As Meghan shared, “Data tells us what is happening. Stories help people understand why it matters.”

Through this session, participants explored how lived experience can become a powerful tool for shaping public policy and strengthening New Jersey’s early childhood system. The challenges facing child care are complex, but those closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions.

Thank you to Meghan and Susan for helping early childhood leaders see their stories not just as experiences, but as advocacy, strategy, and policy power.

Big news for child care advocacy in New Jersey!

Start Strong NJ has launched the Jenga Advisory Council, a statewide council created to make sure the voices of child care providers, educators, and those closest to the work are helping guide the future of child care policy.

NJAEYC is especially proud that Susan Dannemiller, our Senior Policy & Engagement Specialist, will serve as Chair of the Council. This is an important step forward because policy is stronger when the people who live its consequences every day are heard.

The name “Jenga” is such a powerful reflection of New Jersey’s child care system. Funding, enrollment, workforce stability, regulations, family affordability, and provider sustainability are all connected. When one piece is weakened, the entire system feels the impact.

Through the Jenga Advisory Council, Start Strong NJ is reinforcing what we know to be true: child care providers are not peripheral to the system, they are the foundation. When providers are strong, families are supported, businesses are stronger, and New Jersey’s economy can thrive.

NJAEYC looks forward to continuing this work alongside Start Strong NJ to advocate for affordable child care, professional compensation for educators, and sustained public investment in the child care system.

The NJAEYC Leadership Institute brought together passionate early childhood educators, administrators, advocates, presenters, and leaders from across New Jersey for meaningful conversations, powerful reflection, and genuine connection centered around this year’s theme: Leadership During Uncertain Times.

From inspiring keynote moments with Dr. Gerard Costa to engaging workshops and hallway conversations that reminded us we are not alone in this work, the day was filled with learning, collaboration, and renewed purpose.

Thank you to our presenters, sponsors, exhibitors, attendees, volunteers, and leadership team for helping make this year’s Institute such a meaningful experience for our early childhood community.

The conversations do not stop here!

Stories shape understanding. Stories move people. And in early childhood advocacy, the right story can help decision-makers see what data alone cannot.

NJAEYC is proud to partner with the Florida Association for the Education of Young Children, for The Story is the Strategy: Narrative and Messaging for Early Childhood Advocates on June 20, 2026.

This webinar will support early childhood educators, leaders, and advocates in strengthening the way we communicate the real experiences, challenges, and impact of the early childhood field. Together, we’ll explore how narrative, messaging, and lived experience can become powerful tools for advocacy and change.

Because when we tell the story of early childhood well, we help others understand why this work matters. Register today and join the conversation!

Powerful words and even more powerful reminders from our Leadership Institute keynote speaker, Dr. Gerard Costa. Through this year’s theme, Leadership During Uncertain Times, Dr. Costa challenged us to reflect on what true leadership really looks like, authenticity, self-awareness, compassion, vision, growth, and the importance of leading alongside others.

Thank you, Dr. Costa, for reminding us that leadership is not simply a title; it is reflected in our actions, relationships, and the ways we support and influence others every day.
