After an accident, it’s easy to think that if the insurance company offers to pay your medical bills, you’re getting a fair deal. But that isn’t always the whole story.

The truth is, an injury can cost you more than you might expect. Between doctor’s appointments, missed days at work, and aches and pains that don't go away as quickly as you’d hoped, the expenses can add up. If you accept a settlement too soon, you might end up paying some of those costs out of pocket.

Our personal injury attorneys know that there’s more to an accident than what shows up on a medical bill. We’re here to help you understand your options, make sure nothing gets overlooked, and work toward a fair outcome so you can focus on getting back on your feet.

A will can play an important role in determining what happens to certain assets after your death, but it doesn’t do everything. A will doesn’t appoint someone to make financial or medical decisions for you during your lifetime if you become unable to do so. It also doesn’t necessarily avoid probate or control assets that already have beneficiary designations.

A thoughtful estate plan looks at who can act for you if you become incapacitated, how your assets transfer, whether your beneficiary designations consistent with your wishes, and much more.

For many people going through a divorce, keeping the family home feels like the natural choice. That can be especially true when kids are involved or when the home holds a lot of memories.

But keeping the house is not always as straightforward as it sounds.

There may still be a mortgage to pay, along with taxes, insurance, repairs, and other costs. One spouse may need to refinance the home, and the other spouse may need to receive their share of the home’s value. Keeping the house can also affect how other property is divided in the divorce.

At The McLario Firm, our family law attorneys help clients think through the full picture so they can make choices that work not just today, but down the road too.

What happens when one spouse needs nursing home care, but the other remains at home?

Attorney Maxx Forti discusses Medicaid planning for married couples and the protections available through the community spouse exemption. These protections may allow the spouse remaining at home to retain certain assets while their loved one receives the care they need.
