I recently conducted a continuing legal education course for family law attorneys on the use of parenting coordinators in high conflict custody cases. Research tells us that chronic high conflict between parents can actually alter the way a child's brain functions. The use of a mediator or parenting coordinator trained in high conflict dispute resolution is an effective way to reduce this conflict.

I am trained as a parenting coordinator in high conflict disputes and use those skills in my own mediation practice to address the unique needs of a high conflict case. I also use those same skills to help my own clients prepare for litigation when they are the victim of a high conflict spouse or ex-spouse.

It is great to see these discussions centering around the impact litigation and high conflict have on children.

The 3 Biggest Mistakes We Make With Narcissists

If you are litigating against or parenting with a narcissist, here are things to avoid.

1. Do not even bother trying to tell them how their behavior impacts others. A narcissist will never care so do not waste your time.
2. Do not tell them what you are planning to do. Just do it.
3. Do not believe them if they pretend to show remorse. Faking remorse is a strategy to manipulate you.
4. Do not argue with a narcissist. It is like the old saying about wrestling with a pig. Instead, use a strategy called "gray rock" or "yellow rock". Narcissists are time thieves so respond only to what really requires a response.
