🔥 13,000+ smoke damage claims. All involving homes that never burned.

That’s the California Department of Insurance’s estimate following the January 2025 Los Angeles fires. The homes survived the flames, but smoke contamination left families facing questions about testing, cleanup and whether it was safe to return.

Now, California is changing how those claims are handled.

Signed September 15, 2026, AB 1642 and AB 1795 take effect January 1, 2027. Together, they establish a framework for wildfire smoke testing and restoration, with clearer responsibilities for insurers.

Here’s what the legislation addresses:

🔬 Who pays for testing?
Insurers must cover required lead and asbestos testing for qualifying smoke-damaged homes within wildfire impact zones.

🏠 What does cleanup need to accomplish?
The legislation requires coverage for qualifying remediation and restoration to pre-loss condition, guided by applicable testing and cleanup standards.

🧳 When can temporary housing benefits end?
The laws protect against cutting off Additional Living Expense coverage before a home is remediated and cleared for occupancy, subject to applicable coverage limits.

🌀 Hurricane Isaias, the first major hurricane of the 2026 season, came ashore on the Florida Panhandle, and this is the reality it left for the people living there.

Roofs torn open. Streets turned to rivers. The homes, storefronts, cars and boats in this video weren’t just property; they were people’s lives and livelihoods.

What footage like this doesn’t show is everything that comes after: families sorting through what’s left, business owners wondering when they can reopen, and neighbors stepping up for each other with supplies, a helping hand or simply a place to stay. 🤝

If you’re in the affected area, please be careful in the days ahead:

⚠️ Avoid floodwater. It can hide live wires, debris and contamination.

⚠️ Stay away from downed power lines.

⚠️ If you smell gas, leave right away and call from a safe distance.

⚠️ Don’t enter damaged buildings until they’re cleared as safe.

📸 When it’s safe, photograph and video everything before cleanup starts. Those first images matter more than most people realize.

🌀 Hurricane Isaias has strengthened into a Category 3 storm, with landfall expected Friday night near the Alabama–Florida border.

Communities along the Florida Panhandle and neighboring Gulf Coast face damaging winds, dangerous storm surge and flooding.

Potential damage and economic impacts could exceed $4.5 billion if the storm’s effects reach Pensacola and Eglin Air Force Base, according to Chuck Watson of Enki Research, as reported by Insurance Journal.

Behind that number are families worried about their homes, business owners protecting what they’ve built, and communities facing the possibility of a difficult recovery. Damage can mean more than repairs. It can mean displacement, interrupted paychecks and neighborhood businesses struggling to reopen.

🏠 Their home was destroyed by a devastating storm. But that was only the beginning of what this family had to go through.

🏈 Somebody sign those porta potties. They’ve got a running game, and they already know how to stink up MetLife. 🚽💨

All joking aside, it’s been a rough weekend for the tri-state area. This nor’easter has brought destructive winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding to our region, leaving communities dealing with property damage, outages and flooded roads.

The parking lot footage might make us laugh, but there’s nothing funny about a tree hitting your roof or water coming into your home or business. And when the storm moves on, the damage doesn’t.

If your property was hit, put safety first. Take photos and videos of the damage when it’s safe, and save your receipts for cleanup and temporary repairs.
