Important information for anyone looking for a mail in ballot.

In Illinois, you don’t register with a party. At the primary, you simply choose which party’s ballot you want. You can switch each primary. If you pick non-partisan by mail, you may not get a ballot if no non-partisan issues are on it.

Attention elected officials and candidates!

Be careful as you manage your social media profiles this election season and beyond. Not only do you need to make sure you don't use your official page for campaign activities, but a Federal Judge has ruled that elected officials may not delete or hide comments from certain constituents.

The Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman held that Ald. Jim Gardiner “engaged in both content-based and speaker-based restrictions on his page…” and therefore violated the First Amendment. The Judge went on to say that Gardiner did not have the power to moderate his page by deleting comments he considered harassing or even threatening by hiding or deleting them, nor could he block certain users. The lawsuit stemmed from Gardiner blocking six critics of his official page in 2021.

“The record is clear that Gardiner engaged in both content-based and speaker-based restrictions on his page, according to the ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman. The Court thus finds Gardiner in violation of the First Amendment.”

While everyone is still watching last night's returns, don't forget there is no time to rest if you would like to run for local office in the spring.

Have you started preparing for the municipal elections in April?

Now we know what you’re thinking—we have nearly 40 days until the General Election, let’s get through one before we start another. Oh, how we wish that was possible.

Here’s the thing though, if you are considering running in April, if you wait to start until November 9th, you’ll be behind because petitions are due just weeks after the current election.

Everything from mayor, trustee, and board positions for park districts, townships, libraries, and school boards will be on our ballots on April 4th—and the first step in the process has already begun as petitions are being circulated now.

Anyone considering running for office in the spring- pay attention to these dates.

Access to justice is a real problem plaguing this country whether it is the cost of an attorney, knowledge of how the system works or simply the innability to get to the courthouse. It is great to see Lake County trying to find out more about the issue and then look for solutions.
