*Update - Correction! HHS advises they will be present at the substation from 10:00am-11am, today 9/29, Wed 9/30, and Thu 10/1*

Some of our residents returning home today from being evacuated, may unfortunately be dealing with food spoilage and loss as a result of the fire and related power outages.

Yuba County Health and Human Services wants you to know that you may be eligible for either Cal Fresh Replacement benefits and a hot food waiver on your EBT; or for residents that don't currently receive Cal Fresh benefits - there are food gift vouchers available for food replacement at Brownsville Gold Eagle Market.

Here is the important information from HHS and contact numbers for these programs (for residents that had loss from fire/evacuation/power outage during the fire):

Households receiving CalFresh benefits were scheduled to have replacement benefits automatically loaded on to their EBT cards on Sunday, September 27th. CalFresh benefits can temporarily be used to purchase hot, prepared food at locations currently accepting EBT through October 22nd. For more information contact the Yuba County Health and Human Services Customer Service Center at 1-877-652-0739.

Yuba County households that experienced food loss due to Wildfires and related power outages that are NOT currently receiving CalFresh benefits are eligible for gift certificates for use at the Gold Eagle market. For more information contact the Yuba County Office of Emergency Services Call Center at 530-749-7700

Representatives from Yuba County Health and Human Services will be at the Brownsville Sheriff Substation (16796 Willow Glen Rd) Tue-Thu this week from *CORRECTION 10AM-11AM to assist you with these benefits. Please bring ID and proof of Yuba County residency.

There are no shortage of scams that make their way around. One in particular, although not new, is attempting a comeback and compelling us to make this announcement once again. In this scam, known as the "Grandparent Scam" the potential victim receives a phone call from a person either claiming to be their grandchild calling from jail, or a jail official calling on behalf of their grandchild in jail, and requesting or even demanding that the elderly grandparent send funds for the grandchild's bail. Please be advised that Yuba County Sheriff's Department and Yuba County Jail staff will NOT make calls for bail on behalf of inmates, nor do we solicit funds to clear warrants or tickets (another version of a similar scam). If you receive such a call, hang up. If you have genuine concern for a family member that could be in custody, call the direct line for the facility that allegedly called you and contact a trusted family member or friend to tell them about the call, or inquire directly with the person in question. These callers will often discourage their would-be victims from telling anyone (a clear sign this is a scam!). If you know of an elderly family member, neighbor, or friend that could benefit from this announcement, please share this information with them. You can report attempted phone scams and research other valuable information at the FTC Consumer Information page at https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/scam-alerts
