Many of you may have noticed that our county roads have accumulate trash over the past 8 months. Unfortunately our inmate work crews have not been allow out during this time due to the pandemic and other options have been very limited. The Sheriff was recently approached by a group of citizens wanting to help clean up Smyth County. We are very grateful for their generous offer to volunteer. Our Work Crew Officers have been scheduling days with the volunteers and assisting them by providing signs, trash bags, pickers, safety vests, water and a law enforcement presence with emergency lights. The volunteers have picked up 37 bags of trash!! Thank you so much for your hard work!!

If other groups would like to schedule with our Work Crew Officers to help cleanup Smyth County, please contact the Sheriff’s Office by Facebook Messenger or call (276) 783-7204 and leave a message for the officers.

We are asking EVERYONE to help out and properly dispose of trash so it doesn’t pile up along the roadsides. Also, make time to clean up an area near you!

Congratulations to Sergeant R. Landon Smith and K9 Luna for receiving the MADD Outstanding Service Award for Ending Impaired Driving. Although he has only two DUI arrests this fiscal year, he has assisted in several DUI/DUID arrests throughout Smyth County utilizing his K9 partner Luna. Sgt. Smith has assisted deputies, local police officers, and troopers with K9 Luna to make the roadways in Smyth County a safer place. Along with his two DUI arrests, Sergeant Smith has issued 1231 uniform traffic summons this fiscal (07-01-2019 – 06-30-2020).
We are certain that our highways/roadways are much safer due to the efforts of Sergeant Smith and K9 Luna.

Deputy Daniel Hamm has accepted a position with the Virginia State Police. We will certainly miss him at SCSO, but wish him the very best in his new endeavor. It was determined with the recent change in the Code of Virginia that K9 Gary cannot be re-trained so he will be retired and remain with the Hamm family who will love and care for him! K9 Gary will be missed at SCSO as well!

Virginia, Maryland, federal officials warn of mystery seeds in the mail from China

Hundreds more people in Maryland and Virginia have reported receiving mysterious packets of seeds in the mail that look like they’ve come from China. The seed packets were first reported by residents in Utah weeks ago, but after a warning to Virginia residents issued last Friday garnered national attention, consumers from across the country began reporting their cases to Virginia’s Department of Agriculture. If you see these seeds, DO NOT OPEN and plant them.

Virginia officials say they’ve received more than 900 emails and hundreds reports from people who said they received mysterious packets of seeds that were apparently sent from China.
