Congratulations to Gary Sherman, an independent-inventor client of ours out of Westport, Massachusetts, on the 25 February 2025 grant of US Patent No. 12,232,632 for SELF-COVERING OUTDOOR FURNITURE.

Self-contained within each of these furniture units is a selectively deployable closure that is easily moved between stowed and deployed states. Various embodiments further include a lift-assist system that facilitates deployment by a single person with very little effort. No more need for bulky and inconvenient separate furniture covers, or the need to store cushions indoors when not in use! This was a fun patent to write, and the products are even more fun to use.

Congratulations to Schott Corporation / Schott North America, Inc. -- a patent client with whom I have worked for over 25 years -- on the 12 May 2021 grant of Russian Federation Patent No. 2747668, which is a counterpart patent of US Patent No. 11,079,538 for FOVEAL IMAGE INVERTER granted 3 August 2021, and stemming from the same International Patent Application filed pursuant to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). I wish also to extend much credit and appreciation to my colleagues in Moscow, Gorodissky & Partners, for their invaluable work and assistance in navigating and arguing our way to success through the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (i.e., the Russian Patent Office).

This optical element is a variety of fused optical fiber bundle used to transmit coherent images over relatively short distances ranging from millimeters to centimeters, and more particularly, to a twisted image inverter. Embodiments of the invention obviate degradation in light transmission through constituent optical fibers on the outermost portions of the bundle as the bundle is heated and twisted to introduce angular displacement of images about the longitudinal axis of the optical fiber bundle. The solution lies in varying the overall fiber diameter and/or the core-to-clad diameter ratio of the constituent optical fibers as a function of radial displacement from the bundle center axis.

Congratulations to our patent client, Solid State Scientific Corporation, on the 2 June 2020 grant of US Patent No. 10,674,067 for SPECTRAL, POLAR AND SPECTRAL-POLAR IMAGERS FOR USE IN SPACE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. This patent issued from US Application No. 15/824,661 filed 28 November 2017 as a continuation-in-part (CIP) Application of US App. No. 13/900,768 (now US Patent No. 9,835,491 granted 5 December 2017). While both patents rely on optically-dispersive elements to separate constituent wavelengths of a polychromatic image into a plurality of spatially-correlated images of disparate wavelengths for simultaneous algorithmic sampling, the operative beam splitting in the earlier patent exploits dispersion, while the patent issued today exploits diffraction to achieve this objective.

Over a period of almost two decades, Solid State Scientific Corporation of Nashua, New Hampshire and the Law Office of Louis J. Franco have worked together to obtain over a dozen US Patents related to spectral imaging; hostile-fire-threat, missile plume, and muzzle flash detection; and counter-measure deployment. While good results for clients are always satisfying, I take particular personal pleasure and satisfaction in the 27 August 2019 grant of US Patent No. 10,391,349 to KRAM Wellness Group, Inc. for a MUSCLE STRETCHING APPARATUS. This patent is the culmination of 4+ years of work with a great group of inventors that included local student athletes at the time of the invention’s conception. These students were high school freshmen when this process began, and now they are college students. Various embodiments of the subject invention were developed, redeveloped, and then perfected. An impressive amount of ingenuity, testing, clinical trial, and designing went into the extremely versatile, but simple-to-use final product.

I am proud to have been an integral part of a group and process that helped these students learn an enormous amount about engineering, business, and the complexities of patent law and process. This experience will serve them for a lifetime. It has been 14 years since the demands of law practice required that I leave the classroom as an adjunct law school instructor, but the teaching “itch” has never totally left me. Working on this project with students provided some temporary relief.
