Do you think the solar system ends at Neptune? Maybe Pluto? It does not even come close.
The real boundary is the Oort Cloud, a vast spherical shell of icy debris that wraps around everything we have ever mapped, charted, or sent a spacecraft through.
Neptune sits about 30 astronomical units from the Sun. The Oort Cloud begins somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 astronomical units out and stretches as far as 100,000. Every planet, every moon, every asteroid belt, the entire familiar solar system fits inside the central pinprick of this structure.
Nobody has ever seen it directly. Everything we know is inferred from long-period comets that occasionally get nudged inward and fall toward the Sun. The cloud itself has never been observed. It is a boundary defined almost entirely by logic and math.
It is thought to contain trillions of icy bodies, remnants from the solar system's formation 4.5 billion years ago, flung outward by early gravitational chaos and left sitting in near-total darkness ever since.
Voyager 1 has been traveling since 1977. It is the fastest and most distant human-made object ever launched. It will not reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud for another 300 years. Passing through it completely will take around 30,000 years.
That is the actual size of the solar system. Not the diagram with eight planets most of us memorized in school.
Neptune is not the edge. By the true scale of things, it is barely the front yard.
