Starting May 1, 2014 the Copyright Office is increasing its fees. The new filing fee jumps from $35 to $55 for online filing. However, they created a new category for works that are: a single author, single claimant and a single work that is not work for hire, where the fee filing fee will remain at $35.

Key points: (1) Get it in writing (as you should with everything); (2) use it (continuously) or lose it; (3) you must control and enforce your mark to keep your rights in it.

If you're going to send someone mp3s, make sure they have all the iTunes metadata in there. It's maddening to have to hunt down all the randomly named tracks in iTunes in order to add the artist information.
