A story of love and faith...and hope.
3 years ago, I met a client whose husband was in a terrible car accident, leaving him bedridden, unable to speak and requiring 24 hour care. He was placed in a nursing home. She was devastated; they’d been married for over 40 years; but she was hopeful.
•
The doctors wrote him off, telling her he won’t be able to speak, he’s not competent, and he won’t be able to ever return home. She felt otherwise- she knew he understood her when she spoke to him; recognized their kids and other visitors, and expressed joy and sadness as he experienced them. She remained hopeful.
•
She is remarkable. She has a spirit about her that leaves a lasting impression. Whether it’s towards me and my office or the nursing home staff where her husband lived, she went out of her way to show love and appreciation to all. She radiates hope.
•
She is a woman of faith and prayed for him daily.
•
For 3 years, she went to be with him every day and she never went empty handed. She would bring his favorite treats, read his favorite books to him and make sure her visits were full of positivity, gratitude and...hope.
•
She called us the other day to share some news about her husband. Since Covid, these calls are usually worrisome.
•
She shared that due to Covid, the only way she could see him was through a window; and all they could both do was cry. She decided to bring him home and care for him herself, as best as she could. Her kids supported her and offered to help as well. She believed that being at home would make him happier.
•
She said that after 3 months of being home, he is now able to walk up to 5 blocks, he can now write again, he remembers his favorite places to go and directs her to those places when she’s driving. He is happy and thriving and getting stronger every day.
•
She never gave up hope, and she’s made a lasting impression on me.
