Hurricane Idalia Update - August 30, 2023 - 9am
Hurricane Idalia made landfall at 7:45am as a Category 4 storm at Keeden Beach, FL (Big Bend area).
Idalia has passed Longboat Key but impacts of rain, wind, and storm surge continue to build and create dangerous conditions on the island.
• Anyone remaining on the island is urged to stay in their homes - dangerous flooding on roads, potential for downed power lines, and other risks exists.
• If you evacuated, please stay in place
• Ringling Bridge, Cortez Bridge and Manatee Avenue Bridge are all closed to Westbound traffic and expected to remain closed to at least mid-day.
• There is also no access to the island through St. Armands and Bradenton Beach which are flooded and closed.
• **There is no access to leave the island AND no access to get onto the island at this time, and no estimate for access.
• Law enforcement are also posted at all bridges and not allowing access.
• Please stay off the roads - let emergency responders, which includes Public Works personnel, perform response and recovery actions to make the island safe!
• FPL reports no power outages at this time, although power outages remain possible in these conditions.
• Northward from the 6500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive (GMD) through Longboat Pass Bridge is impassable and also at the 4600 block of GMD in the Zota area. Broadway and areas in the Village are flooded at this time and not expected to subside until at least low tide this evening. Staff continues to report as other areas are identified.
• The South end roads are not impacted as severely although it is not safe to be on the road.
• Storm surge of 3-5' will reach its peak mid-morning through early evening exacerbated by a 1.7' high at 12.22 pm - low tide is not until 7:30pm.
• Winds are 39-57 mph keeps water pushed onto the island even as the tide levels begin to drop.
