As of July 1, a new Virginia law requires all drivers to stop (not just yield) to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks until the pedestrian has cleared the lane. This includes:
• all lanes and both directions at clearly marked crosswalks;
• any regular pedestrian crossing – such as residential intersections – even if unmarked; or
• at any intersection where the maximum speed limit is not more than 35 miles per hour.

In Negotiations, Givers Are Smarter Than Takers

During graduate school, I took a few courses on negotiation. I learned valuable skills that I continue to use daily as both a lawyer and as a mediator. One of the most important lessons is that the best resolutions don't involve winners and losers, rather everyone wins. Here's research and another explanation.

Generosity is a sign of intelligence, and givers are the rising tide that lifts all boats.

Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation

Congratulations to Cloey Sharp from Pocahontas County High School who was awarded the 2020 Norval E. Waugh scholarship, in honor of my father. Like my dad, Cloey plans to go into public education. This year, the school was unable to hold the awards ceremony and the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation created this video to honor all Pocahontas County High School award recipients.

Day two of senior celebrations, we feature Pocahontas County High School scholarship recipients. This collection of scholarships includes those that we manage and those that we administer the applications for.

It is our great pleasure to showcase these students for their hard work and scholastic achievements.

Both Virginia and West Virginia often mandate a parenting class in child custody matters. An online court-approved parenting class that will satisfy the requirements imposed by the court is being offered in Virginia. I do not know if West Virginia would accept the court to satisfy their court-ordered requirement, but the courts often do accept programs from out of state.

Without more lawyers being trained in collaborative practices and members of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, clients who want a collaborative divorce must travel or do meetings via videoconference in many areas. Few collaborative professionals, besides me, practice in Winchester, Clarke, Jefferson and Berekely Counties. Online training is available and would expand options for our clients in these areas. What a huge accomplishment! Thank you to the volunteers.

We did it! Rather, YOU did it. 17,000 masks and counting!

When we challenged our community to see if we could make 10,000 masks in two weeks, we had a pretty good feeling that we would meet our goal. But we never expected 10,000 masks in 10 days!

To all those who cut fabric, powered up sewing machines, threaded needles, stuck themselves with said needle, and pieced together thousands of yards of colorful fabric, thank you from the bridge of our noses to the bottom of our hearts. We will continue to encourage and accept all donations of face masks, which we will use to help preserve and extend the life of our PPEs and help keep our patients and all those who work on our campuses safe. We are truly grateful to be surrounded by such amazing people!
