Nobody sets out to keep bad records. They just help.
A daughter covers her mother's bills for a few years. A little from one account, a little from her own, and no list anywhere, because it never crossed her mind that anyone would ask.
Then someone asks.
She cannot show what she did, and that looks worse than anything that actually happened.
So I document as I go. Receipts. A reason beside every distribution. Accountings a beneficiary can read without anyone's memory being the only evidence.
Records are not an accusation. They are what stops one from forming.
If you are handling a parent's money today, keep a plain list of what you paid and why. Whether a formal accounting is required is a question for your attorney. General information, not legal advice.
