Reactionary Gap - Something I learned in the ‘90s as a civilian in law-enforcement. Always tried to help reporters understand it with varying success. Newer reporters don’t have a clue. And if you read the comments section on any social media platform these days, it seems not a lot of people do.

A suspect with a knife can pose a deadly threat even if they are not physically touching the officer. That’s not “spin.”

I learned it as the Tueller principle. Over time, the distance has changed, but the reactionary gap principle is still the same - the lesson is about the time needed to perceive, decide, and respond to a rapidly developing deadly threat, not about a fixed distance.

Tueller found in 1983: An average person armed with an edged weapon can cover approximately 21 feet in about 1.5 seconds. In many cases, 1.5 seconds is about the minimum time it takes a trained officer to recognize the threat, draw a holstered handgun, and fire an effective shot.

I used to invite reporters to the Police Academy, and we would demonstrate it with a rubber knife and a safety suit. We gave them a replica gun and a holster. They got “stabbed” every time before they got a “shot” off. Every. Time.

Modern police training focuses on the officer’s reactionary gap rather than a fixed distance. The critical issue is whether the officer had enough time to perceive the threat and respond before the suspect could inflict serious bodily harm.

It’s not spin.

For those in law enforcement who have ever been falsely accused and told to “just take it,” and “you can’t correct the media” read this carefully. This is what accountability looks like when a Sheriff refuses to let lies stand.

Dodge County (WI) Sheriff Dale Schmidt stood up today for law enforcement agencies that are tired of being besmirched by people committing fraud and who seek to denigrate our federal, state and local law-enforcement.

Sheriff Schmidt has taken steps to ensure accountability. He has filed a defamation lawsuit in Federal Court in response to the allegations and their impact.

False claims of this nature have significant consequences. They can undermine public trust, misdirect law enforcement resources, and damage the reputations of agencies and individuals who are committed to serving their communities lawfully and professionally.

Call it what you want, but this is a clear example of consequences when defamation against the men and women who are sworn to protect us is not ignored.

Today, we heard powerful and painful testimony from Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher McCray as he took the stand and relived the night his partner, Officer Kendall Corder, was killed in the line of duty.

Officer McCray showed extraordinary courage - not only in the face of danger that night, but again today in the courtroom, forced to recount moments no officer should ever have to revisit. His strength, his professionalism, and his unwavering commitment to his partner and this profession were on full display for the community.

What happened that night is a stark reminder of the reality our police officers face every single day. They go into the unknown; not knowing what is waiting around the next corner, but going anyway. They answer the call, without hesitation, because others cannot.

Officer Corder and Officer McCray stood between good and evil. That is not rhetoric - it is the truth of what policing can demand in its most critical moments.

Please support every officer who puts on the uniform and accepts the weight of this responsibility.

I could not be prouder of my friend, Albanian Police Commissioner Adisa Duka. It was my honor to work with her and other police commanders there to establish the Association for Women in Uniform at the Albanian State Police. Adisa and the Albanian State Police are very close to my heart ever since we worked together on counterterrorism initiatives over the years. So happy to see these women taking their place publicly. Our army of women in law-enforcement is strong!

This episode features Mrs. Adisa Duka, from the Albanian State Police. A powerful new podcast series celebrating the extraordinary women who serve their nati...

Enjoyed a great conversation with Tom Zenner and Kato Kaelin (yes, THAT Kato Kaelin) on their podcast “One Degree of Scandalous.”

People keep asking/criticizing why I continue to talk about the Jeffrey Dahmer case. Yes, I wrote a book about it. But there is still so much misinformation out there, 34 years later, including a false narrative that lays blame at the feet of the Milwaukee Police for the crimes of one insane individual. That is wrong and I will keep telling people about it. Please listen to our conversation here: (point of clarity - I wasn’t inside Dahmer’s apartment - I was able to look inside from the threshold).

In Jeffery Dahmer’s Case, Anne Schwartz was the FIRST reporter inside his apartment in July 1991 - before crime scene tape, before the world knew his name, w...
