MYTH: A notary can certify a copy of absolutely any document.

FACT: Arkansas notaries may certify certain photocopies, but there are important exceptions.
A notary may not certify copies of vital or public records such as birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, and court orders. Certified copies of those records usually must come from the agency that issued or maintains them.

Even the notary stamp has boundaries!

MYTH: Every notarization is exactly the same.

FACT: There are different notarial acts, including acknowledgments, oaths, and affidavits.
For example, one document may require a signer to acknowledge that a signature is their own act, while another may require the signer to swear or affirm that certain statements are truthful. The stamp may look similar, but the ceremony behind it can be different!

Please check your document or contact the receiving agency to determine which notarial act it requires.

MYTH: Any notary can perform a remote notarization using FaceTime, Zoom, or an ordinary video call.

FACT: Arkansas remote online notarization requires an authorized electronic notary and an approved remote notarization provider.
Approved systems include special identity verification, credential analysis, secure audio and video, and record keeping features. An ordinary video chat does not automatically meet those requirements.

Technology is wonderful—but not every video call is a notarization!

MYTH: A notary can stamp or sign a blank certificate so someone can complete it later.

FACT: A notary should never sign or seal an incomplete notarial certificate.
The date, location, type of notarization, and other required information should be properly completed as part of the notarial act. Leaving blanks could allow incorrect information to be added after the document leaves the notary.

No blank checks—and no blank notarizations!

MYTH: A notary stamp by itself makes a document properly notarized.

FACT: A stamp is only one part of the notarization. A complete notarial certificate generally includes the notary’s official signature and seal, the date, the location or venue of the notarization, and wording explaining which notarial act was performed.

A random stamp on the page is not notarization magic!

A proper notarization is a complete process—not just a piece of ink.

MYTH: Every Arkansas notary is legally required to keep a traditional notary journal.

FACT: Arkansas generally does not require a traditional notary to keep a journal, but the Secretary of State strongly recommends it. A journal can document details such as the date, type of notarization, document involved, signer information, and fees collected.

At NEA Mobile Notary, careful record keeping is part of taking the job seriously.

MYTH: Because an Arkansas notary has statewide authority, they can also notarize while visiting another state.

FACT: An Arkansas notary may perform notarial acts throughout Arkansas, but cannot use an Arkansas commission and seal to notarize a document while physically located in another state.

The document may be traveling—but the notary’s authority does not pack a suitcase!

MYTH: An Arkansas notary can only work inside the county listed on their stamp.

FACT: An Arkansas notary’s authority extends throughout the entire State of Arkansas—not only their county of commission.
That county on the stamp matters, but it does not create an invisible county line that the notary cannot cross!

NEA Mobile Notary proudly provides convenient mobile service throughout Jonesboro and surrounding Northeast Arkansas communities.

MYTH: A notary can notarize their own signature.

FACT: A notary cannot notarize their own signature. A notary also should not perform a notarization when they are a party to the document or would receive a direct or indirect financial benefit from it. That would not be very “impartial,” would it? A proper notarization requires an unbiased notary who can independently verify the signer and complete the notarial act.
