50 YEARS OF BUSINESS WOOHOO!
Nell Huntspon’s Flower Box reached a huge milestone this month - fifty years in business! In the 1960s, Nell Huntspon sat in her business class at Lane College and researched services that were and were not available in Jackson. She learned that East Jackson did not have a florist. That really caught her eye, so she decided to start her own flower company.
They started their business on Institute Street which was more of a residential area at the time. They wanted to start small. In fact, their location was so small that its size inspired the business’ name, Flower Box - because their space wasn’t much bigger than a box!
The Institute area began a time of urban renewal and, as a result, became less residential. It was time for them to move on. Nell recollects, “When it came to our attention, we began to look for a place to relocate. We wanted to be in a location that advertised to travelers during every hour of the day - even as we were home sleeping.”
In 1970, they purchased their current location and built it to their special design. During the past 50 years of being in business, Nell’s family has played a huge role in the success of the company. She has been able to work with her children, niece, nephew, husband, brother, and sister. The company brought them together in a unique way.
Nell was “born and reared” in Jackson. She loves that she has been able to create a business that has withstood the test of time. She says that being located downtown has helped greatly because “I’m close enough to be downtown and yet I can touch other areas, too. The main streets all go through downtown Jackson. My building is advertising as people drive the streets.”
After fifty years of business, Nell is still excited to be in the shop. She says, “I cannot wait to get here and see what will happen over the course of a day. I love being with customers - to greet them and see all of them that I have known for all these years.”
Visit Nell Huntspon Flower Box and brighten someone’s day with a beautiful arrangement. She is located at 351 North Royal.
