West Tennessee Legal Services

West Tennessee Legal Services Our mission at WTLS is to provide equal access to justice in our 17-county service area in West Tenne

WTLS is a nonprofit law firm that exists to fill in the gaps in the justice system that create burdens for low-income and marginalized communities in accessing legal representation. WTLS helps to protect individuals’ access to food, healthcare, housing, and safety. Our attorneys help victims of housing discrimination seek justice and find a home. We help victims of domestic violence obtain orders

of protection, create safety plans, and find the peace that they deserve. WTLS helps community members facing unlawful evictions, sexual assault, creditor harassment, financial exploitation, elder abuse, and veterans who need assistance accessing benefits. We believe that everyone deserves equal access to justice, regardless of their level of income.

Beginning July 1, 2023, Unemployed adults aged 18 to 49 who do not have children in the home and who do not have disabilities are limited to three months of SNAP benefits every three years. The clock starts July 1. There are exemptions for veterans, the homeless, and nearly adult former foster care youth. Ask the TDHS if an exemption applies or they have suggestions for community service activities or employment.

On May 1st, 1958, Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1st to be Law Day, a day to reflect on and honor the role of law in the United States and recognize its importance in our society. This celebration continues today and has grown globally.

Law Day is an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.

The 2023 Law Day theme is “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration.” This theme encourages people of the United States to understand our institutions, respect one another, and collaborate to create a better future for our country.

As President Lincoln proclaimed, “We are not enemies, but friends… Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.”

West Tennessee Legal Services and the Jackson-Madison County Bar Association will host its annual Law Day Celebration on May 12 at Noon at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. This year’s keynote speaker is Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti.
