Today marked the official groundbreaking for the long-awaited Broad River Road widening project — a major infrastructure improvement designed to ease congestion, improve safety, and support growth in the Irmo area.

📍 Project Highlights

Expanded Roadway:
The corridor between Royal Tower Drive and Dutch Fork Road will be widened to a 5-lane section — featuring four travel lanes plus a center turning lane to improve traffic flow.

Safer Connectivity:
Plans include dedicated on-street bike lanes and new sidewalks, creating safer access for cyclists, pedestrians, and the surrounding community.

Construction Timeline:
Work has officially begun, with completion anticipated in early 2029.

This important improvement is funded through Richland County’s Penny Transportation Tax, putting local tax dollars to work to enhance infrastructure and mobility across the Midlands.
