🌿🐣 As Easter Monday—the second day of Easter, known in Poland as Śmigus-Dyngus—comes to a close, we reflect on the beauty of the entire holiday.

From the cherished Holy Saturday tradition of preparing and blessing Easter foods, to the joy of Easter Sunday, and today’s celebration of renewal, community, and tradition—these moments carry deep meaning for many of us with Polish roots.

While Easter Monday is observed more quietly here in the United States, it remains a meaningful continuation of the holiday—a reminder of where we come from and the traditions we carry forward.

At Rudnicka Law Firm, we proudly celebrate both—honoring our heritage while building our future here.

Wishing you a peaceful close to the Easter season and a time filled with renewal, growth, and new beginnings.

SXSW Austin, Texas 2026 🇵🇱🇺🇸

Spent some great time at SXSW this year connecting with the Central European community at both the Polish House and the Slovak House.

The Polish House, organized by Polska Agencja Inwestycji i Handlu - PAIH, the Polish Consulate, and PolCham Texas, brought together an incredible group of founders, innovators, and professionals building strong bridges between Poland and the U.S.

The Slovak House, organized by Slovak PRO, was just as impressive — a great space for conversations around startups, expansion, and international collaboration.

What stood out the most (as always) — the people. SXSW really reminds you that real connections are everything when it comes to business and building something meaningful across borders.

At Rudnicka Law Firm, this is exactly where we come in — helping startups and businesses expand into the U.S. from the legal side, whether it’s business setup, immigration, or navigating cross-border matters.

Excited to see how these conversations turn into real collaborations.

If you’re a founder or business looking to enter the U.S. market — feel free to reach out.

🇵🇱 Polish Citizenship for Children Born Abroad

Many families are surprised to learn that a child born outside of Poland may still automatically be a Polish citizen at birth.

Under Polish citizenship law, the primary principle is citizenship by descent (jus sanguinis). This means that if at least one parent is a Polish citizen at the time of the child’s birth, the child generally acquires Polish citizenship automatically, regardless of the country where the child is born.

⚖️ Important to know:
Since August 15, 2012, there is no longer an option to choose a foreign citizenship instead of Polish citizenship for a child when one parent is a Polish citizen and the other parent is a citizen of another country. Regardless of the parents’ wishes, the child acquires Polish citizenship by operation of law at birth.

In practice, this means that children born in countries such as the United States, Canada, or elsewhere may hold both Polish citizenship and the citizenship of their country of birth, if that country permits dual citizenship.

However, in order to fully exercise these rights, families typically must complete certain formal steps, such as:
• registering the child’s foreign birth certificate with the Polish civil registry (transcription),
• confirming Polish citizenship if necessary, and
• applying for a Polish passport through a Polish consulate.

For many families living abroad, this process opens the door to European Union citizenship for their child, providing opportunities for living, studying, and working throughout the EU.

If your child was born outside Poland and at least one parent is a Polish citizen, it may be worthwhile to review whether the child already holds Polish citizenship under Polish law.

📩 If you have questions about Polish citizenship or registration of a child born abroad, feel free to contact our office. We would be happy to assist.

• transkrypcja zagranicznego aktu urodzenia w polskim urzędzie stanu cywilnego,
• ewentualne potwierdzenie posiadania obywatelstwa polskiego,
• złożenie wniosku o polski paszport w konsulacie RP.

I have had the pleasure of serving as Co-Chair of the International Law Committee of the HYLA - Houston Young Lawyers Association (2025–2026 term).

HYLA brings together attorneys in their first 10 years of practice and creates opportunities for professional development, leadership, community service, and networking within the Houston legal community.

Through the International Law Committee, we explored how international law intersects with U.S. law and policy, and discussed topics such as international business transactions, commercial arbitration, cross-border legal issues, and human rights. The committee brings together lawyers and law students interested in international law, including internationally trained attorneys practicing in the United States and attorneys working on cross-border matters.

One of the highlights of the year was helping co-organize the HYLA International Friendsgiving, an event celebrating the diversity of Houston’s legal community. The initiative was started by Immediate Past President Mariame Aana, and our committee organized it twice in partnership with the Texas International Lawyers Society, the International Law Section of the Houston Bar Association, the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston, and other organizations and sponsors. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring together lawyers from many international backgrounds practicing in Houston.

I also had the opportunity to moderate and co-organize a CLE panel titled “Pathways in Dispute Resolution: Mediation and Arbitration,” organized by the HYLA ADR and International Committees. The panel qualified for CLE credit and featured Justice Jerry Zimmerer and Chimdimma Onyedebelu (AAA-ICDR), who shared valuable insights about careers in mediation and arbitration.

Time truly flew on this committee. It has been a pleasure working with fellow co-chairs Atim Amana, Hon. Zimmerer, and John Ngunjiri, and connecting with such a vibrant and international legal community here in Houston. 🌍⚖️

Many foreign entrepreneurs are surprised to learn that they can legally live and run a business in the U.S. through the E-2 Treaty Investor Visa.

The E-2 visa allows nationals of treaty countries to invest in and actively manage a U.S. business. It is one of the most flexible options for entrepreneurs who want to expand their business internationally.

At Rudnicka Law Firm, we assist investors and business owners with structuring their companies and preparing strong E-2 visa applications.

✔️ Key requirements include:

• Being a citizen of an E-2 treaty country
• Making a substantial investment in a U.S. business
• Owning at least 50% of the enterprise or having operational control
• The business must be active and real (not passive)
• The investor must direct and develop the business

The E-2 visa can also allow spouses to work in the U.S., and children to study.

We frequently work with entrepreneurs from Europe — including Poland — who want to establish businesses in the United States, expand their companies, or relocate their operations.

If you are considering starting or investing in a U.S. business, the E-2 visa may be the right strategy.

📩 Feel free to reach out to discuss your situation.
