Uber is expanding its services beyond ride-sharing with the launch of Uber Health in the U.S.

The new service is designed to help users request non-emergency ambulance transportation through the Uber app, making it easier to arrange medical transport when an ambulance is needed but an emergency response is not.

The expansion reflects a broader strategy by Uber to move further into healthcare, building on existing services that help users schedule medical appointments, prescription pickups, and other health-related transportation.

BREAKING: Amazon’s autonomous vehicle unit Zoox received federal approval Thursday to commercially deploy up to 2,500 robotaxis annually over the next two years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration granted a temporary exemption allowing the rollout under an enhanced oversight structure.

Robotaxi operators require federal approval for self-driving vehicles that lack traditional human controls such as steering wheels and pedals.

Along with Zoox, others such as Tesla (TSLA) and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Waymo are racing to expand autonomous ​ride-hailing services in the United States.

The agency said it determined the vehicle is as safe as an ​equivalent vehicle meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards that are being waived. Zoox cannot sell any of the vehicles to the public.

All remote operators must be located in the United States, NHTSA said. Zoox must publish maps of areas indicating where the vehicles are operating.

Deputy Erika Serrato, 24, of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, died after being struck by a heavy-duty commercial truck while directing traffic at the scene of a crash on Interstate 45 near Woodlands Parkway early Sunday morning.

According to investigators, deputies responded around 2:39 a.m. to a multi-vehicle crash involving an alleged intoxicated driver. As Deputy Serrato and other deputies worked to secure the scene and protect motorists, a commercial truck pulling a trailer struck her and two marked patrol vehicles with their emergency lights activated.

Deputy Serrato was rushed to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. She had served with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for six years, beginning her career as a detention officer before becoming a patrol deputy just six months ago.

Another deputy was injured after being struck by debris but was treated and released from the hospital.

No charges have been filed against the commercial truck driver, who was hospitalized after the crash. The incident remains under investigation. The only charge announced so far is against 34-year-old Ashton Jammer, who faces a DWI charge for his alleged role in the initial crash deputies were responding to.

Our deepest condolences are with Deputy Serrato’s family, friends, and the men and women of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office as they mourn the loss of one of their own. Rest easy, Deputy Serrato. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
