Yesterday the GA Alliance of African American Attorneys (G4A) held its annual meeting!

We elected officers and Iโ€™m proud that Iโ€™ll be serving as Vice-President of the organization.

This evening I had the privilege to attend the reception for Justice Benhamโ€™s portrait fund. Needless to say, Justice Benham is a legend and trailblazer in Georgia legal history.

He was the first African-American ever appointed to the Supreme Court in its more than 140 years. He served as Chief Justice from 1995-2001, elected by his peers. He retired in 2020. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Benham served on the Georgia Court of Appeals for five years.

After completing law school, Justice Benham served in the U.S. Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain. He then served briefly as a trial attorney for the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc.

He served as Special Assistant Attorney General and enjoyed two terms as the President of the Bartow County Bar Association.

He is a past vice president of the Georgia Conference of Black Lawyers, a former board member of the Federal Lawyers Association and of the Georgia Association of Trial Lawyers.

Justice Benham is well respected and has set a high standard for how to practice law and rule from the bench.

Juneteenth honors the liberation of African Americans from slavery. On June 19, 1865, Union Army commander Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which declared freedom for all enslaved persons in the state of Texas.
