Greenville Man Sentenced 30-38 Years

Deontre Taylor pled guilty today to a May 16, 2024 Attempted Murder and a Discharge Weapon into an Occupied Vehicle in Operation from the Sterling Pointe neighborhood. Taylor shot a gun at Zyquavion Carney and Kentavious Condery before their return fire killed an innocent bystander, Patrick Bland. Deontre Taylor then shot into a separate vehicle operated by a neighbor before officers from the Greenville Police Department arrived on scene.

Taylor, who lived at Sterling Pointe, was taken into custody that same evening. This morning, Deontre Taylor pled guilty and was sentenced by the Honorable Cy A. Grant to a minimum of 360 months and a maximum of 457 months (30 years minimum – 38 years maximum) in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.

For their part in the shooting, Kentavious Condery previously pled guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and Zyquavion Carney pled guilty to Accessory After the Fact to Voluntary Manslaughter and are currently incarcerated.

Assistant District Attorney Joel Stadiem represented the State of North Carolina on the case. A special thank you to Detective J.R. Dixon and Detective Cameron Donaldson of the Greenville Police Department and Investigator Veronica Johnson of the District Attorney’s Office for their tireless work on the case.

On September 26, 2022, Zahran Abdelwahab Jaghama was working in his neighborhood store, Amigos To***co Shop located on N. Greene St. in Greenville when an individual entered the store with a baseball bat. Mr. Jaghama was murdered in his store that day and suspects stole money and subsequently fled the scene. Officers with the Greenville Police Department arrived on scene shortly after the murder. Because of the tireless efforts of Greenville Police Department officers, particularly Detective Chris Dawson and Detective Alvaro Elias working with District Attorney Investigator Veronica Johnson, Elijah Daniel was developed as the suspect.

Today, Elijah Daniel pled guilty to Second Degree Murder for the killing of Mr. Jaghama with the State of North Carolina represented by Assistant District Attorney Joel Stadiem. The Honorable Judge Marvin K. Blount, III, sentenced the defendant in the aggravated range to 270 months minimum to 336 months maximum in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (22.5 years min. to 28 years max.)

Zahran Abdelwahab Jaghama was a highly respected pillar of his community and his family. At the sentencing hearing, members of his family talked about his caring nature and generosity. He was well known to give people in the community food, drinks, and money if they were in need.
