Mark Scheffler, a Democrat running for Congress in Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District, proposed a comprehensive framework to reform immigration law that includes a registry for undocumented workers and promises the confidentiality of such data. A proposal that promises confidentiality that both history and ICE’s own targeting infrastructure contradict, offers registrants nothing, changes its terms between platforms, and misstates how TPS works is not a serious contribution to immigration reform. It is a signal sent to voters, wrapped in an acronym, at the expense of people who are already afraid to answer the door, in a week when the cost of being near the wrong list was paid twice.
The primary election is August 11th in Wisconsin, where Ret. Lt. Colonel Rick Crosson and Katrina DeVille are also seeking the Dem nomination for Congress.
