Do you have days where you feel you left a bad boss behind only to hire a worse one next.

Yourself.

Most law firm owners don't set out to trade one boss for a busier one, but buried in case work; that's exactly where they end up.

Michael Ge**er called it decades ago in the E-Myth: "Work on your business, not in it." Yet most owners are still doing the opposite, grinding through billable hours while the firm runs them.

The ones who break the cycle make one shift: they start running the firm like a business.

That means knowing the numbers. As Peter Drucker put it, "What gets measured gets managed." Not glancing at the bank balance and hoping, actually tracking what drives profit.

Warren Buffett says, "accounting is the language of business." If you can't read yours fluently, you're navigating blind.

And if you're waiting for the "right time" to make the shift? Jim Rohn's warning applies: "If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's." In your case, your clients' plan, your caseload plan. Anyone but yours.

Where are you right now… running the firm, or run by it? πŸ‘‡

Every one of these feels like a trap when you're in it. Raise your prices, you'll lose clients. Keep them low, it's not worth your time. Pick one, either way you lose.

πŸ‘‰πŸ»Except that's not actually how it plays out.

Raise your prices the right way and you don't lose clients, you lose the wrong ones. What's left is better leads, less work per dollar, and more room to breathe.

The same is true for the rest of this list. None of it has to be a permanent trade-off, it's usually a sign that something in the pricing, the workflow, or the numbers needs a second look.

Remember, you don't have to figure out which one alone. Go to the link in our bio to schedule a call with us, and let's figure it out together!

We asked our team: what's the one thing you keep on your desk?

Not one answer had anything to do with work. πŸ’›

A picture frame. Little trinkets a daughter made over the years.

It's a good reminder that a firm is people before it's anything else. The numbers, the KPIs, the reports. They matter because of the people doing the work, not instead of them.

The best businesses get both right: serious about the numbers, yet genuinely great places to work.

So this week, before you open a single report, look at your team first. That's the part of the firm no dashboard will ever show you. ✨

Most firms aren't dealing with clients who won't pay. πŸ’Έ

They're dealing with clients who can't tell what they're paying for.

From the bank balance, the two look identical but they're fixed in completely different ways.

Here's what actually happens: a client gets a bill they don't understand, so they set it aside to "deal with later." Later becomes never. A clear invoice removes the reason to stall.

Three small changes, none of them awkward:
βœ”οΈ Explain every charge in plain terms
βœ”οΈ Send invoices electronically the moment the work is billable
βœ”οΈ Offer more than one way to pay

Try this: pull up this month's invoices and ask of each one would a client understand every line without calling you? πŸ“ž

"I'll buy an SUV for the firm and write the whole thing off." πŸš™

We hear this plan every single year. And every year, we have to break the news: it doesn't work quite like that.

Yes, Section 179 lets you deduct qualifying equipment up front. But heavy SUVs have their own cap inside that rule and it's well below what a high-end vehicle actually costs.

Here's the part that trips people up: that cap changes year to year. The number your friend quoted you two years ago? Not the number that applies today.

Thinking about a firm vehicle this year?

Check the current Section 179 SUV limit with your tax advisor before you sign. ✍️

"We already track our numbers." πŸ“Š

We hear this a lot. So we ask: which ones?

Usually it's the financials out of QuickBooks β€” revenue, expenses, what's in the bank.

That's half the picture.

Your accounting software knows the money, but it has no idea which matters it came from, how much time went into it, or whether the work was even billed. That story lives in Clio or Smokeball β€” a completely separate system.

Combine the two into a single view and data becomes insight:
βœ”οΈ Revenue against the hours behind it
βœ”οΈ Which matter types actually pay
βœ”οΈ Which ones just keep everyone busy

Get them side by side this month β€” even if it's just a spreadsheet to start. πŸ“ˆ
