It’s such a touching moment to be with a pet at the end of their lives. Wouldn’t miss it. I’ve told mine I’d see them in the morning…like I did every night. It’s important to be strong for them in the end.

A reflection on Memorial Day. In 1944, my father was scheduled to leave Pearl Harbor on the USS Bismarck Sea, in support of the campaign in the Philippines, and then toward Iwo Jima and Japan. A friend from Richmond asked my Dad to trade orders so his friend could serve with a buddyon the Bismarck Sea. Dad said, “it doesn’t matter to me unless it’s headed to San Francisco”, where my mother was. Dad traded orders and left the Bismarck Sea. In February, 1945, that ship sank off the coast of Iwo Jima after two kamikaze strikes, killing 318 men. The ship he’d left became the last ship lost in action in the war.

In April 1760, Patrick Henry went before a board of examiners to receive his law license.

According to Thomas Jefferson, Henry had “only been reading law six weeks” before appearing before the panel of lawyers which included John and Peyton Randolph, George Wythe, and Robert Nichols. The exam lasted several hours. Henry was grilled by John Randolph who unfairly judged Henry on his middling-class appearance, but Randolph was soon impressed by Henry’s bold and original style of arguing.

Two of the four examiners agreed to sign Henry’s license in exchange for a promise that he would keep studying. Henry took his first case several months later in Hanover County.

In Williamsburg for alumni events, I stopped by a college wear store, where a very young clerk asked if I had my faculty ID for a 10% discount. I said, chuckling, “No, but thank you SO much. I always wanted to be mistaken for a William & Mary professor!”
