The problem is that we wrongly assume that people who differ politically from ourselves are motivated by hate - while we believe that our own motive is benevolence. This causes Contempt for the others which prevents negotiation or even rational discussion. Don't allow yourself to fall into this trap!

Instead of Contempt, we should choose a Curiosity Mindset by remembering to ask ourselves this: “Why would a reasonable person who is motivated by love and benevolence have such an idea?” (You especially have to ask yourself this question even though you already think the other person is motivated by hate!) The mental exercise of Wondering about this question tends to help us avoid the automatic Contempt for others which is brought on by our usual false assumption and which is amplified by memes and rhetoric. The Curiosity Mindset allows us to begin a healthy debate of ideas instead of the devastating shutdown brought on by Contempt. So, please remember to Wonder about the question!

The problem in America today is not incivility or intolerance. It’s something far worse.
