What the past can teach us about business today

Business tips from over 100 years ago, they can't be any good, can they? Surprisingly, they can. Wisdom from our past is just as relevant today as it was then. It may be even more relevant now while we reassess... well, everything. Please check out my post.

Since 20/20 is considered hindsight and we’re all reassessing how we do everything, there has never been a better time to look back and see what we can learn from the women who have come before us. You’d be surprised what they can teach us and how much of their advice is still relevant today. I ...

The CDC has issued new guidance to allow essential workers to remain on the job after exposure to someone testing positive for COVID-19, if those workers are without symptoms and

1. The Employee is prescreened each day - Employers should measure the employee’s temperature and assess symptoms prior to them starting work. Ideally, temperature checks should happen before the individual enters the facility.

2. the Employee self-monitors under the supervision of their employer’s occupational health program. I.E. regular check ins to ensure the employee does not develop symptoms;

3. The employee wears a face mask at all times while in the workplace for 14 days after last exposure. Employers can issue face masks or can approve employees’ supplied cloth face coverings in the event of shortages.

4. The employee maintains 6 feet and practice social distancing as work duties permit in the workplace.

5. All areas are cleaned and disinfected including offices, bathrooms, common areas, shared electronic equipment routinely.

So, yes, it is okay for people who may have been exposed to the virus to continue work IF the above restrictions and safety checks are followed. Stay healthy everyone.

Words matter. Never sign an agreement you don’t fully understand. Make sure the contract has clear and unambiguous language to avoid definition landmines. Lawyers really litigate the meaning of words like: solicit, exclusive, and shall.

How does a lawyer re-starting her own law firm spend her Sunday afternoon? Drafting representation letters while watching Season 11 Supernatural marathon. Only two more episodes (2 hours) before all the admin work is done. Yeah. Or something like it.

Heard in the courtroom -

Judge to witness: Please raise your right hand to be sworn."
Witness raises LEFT hand.
Judge turns to witness and sees left hand up. Rolls eyes.
Judge: "Your other right hand."

Never thought I'd actually see that scenario in action. But yea, it happened.

Controversial NLRB Ruling Could End Contract Employment As We Know It

Another blow to the way small business work came today. While the NLRB is focused on industry giants it ignores the impact of its ruling on small businesses and oversteps into Congresses role. Between this new ruling and the actions by the DOL, small businesses may becoming an endangered species.

If your business uses independent contractors please consult an attorney about what the NRLB decision and recent DOL action and proposed changes mean for you.
