There is a special kind of anxiety in checking your bank account seventeen times a day waiting for your refund to land. I see you. Here is the reality: after your return is accepted, most refunds take up to 21 days. You can track it with the IRS Where's My Refund tool, which updates once a day, usually overnight. Checking it at 2pm and 4pm will not make it come faster. I know. I have been there too.

Owe back taxes and scared to deal with it? Here is what I want you to know: the IRS does payment plans. You do not have to pay it all at once. An installment agreement lets you pay monthly, and just having one in place stops a lot of the stress. The worst move is ignoring it, because penalties and interest keep growing. The second worst move is waiting. I help people set these up regularly. The relief clients feel after is real.

Paying for college, for yourself or your kids? Two credits to know. The American Opportunity Credit is worth up to $2,500 per student for the first four years, and part of it is refundable. The Lifetime Learning Credit is up to $2,000 for tuition beyond that, including grad school and courses to learn new skills. You will need the 1098-T from the school. If anyone in your house is in school, these credits are too big to miss.

When your refund hits, what is the first thing you do? Bills? Savings? A little treat-yourself moment? Debt payoff? I am genuinely curious because everyone has a ritual. Drop it below. And no shame whatever it is, that money is yours. (My only advice: at least know where it is going before it arrives, because a refund with no plan disappears fast.)

Quick explainer because people mix these up. Withholding is tax taken from your paycheck automatically by your employer. Estimated payments are what YOU send in yourself, four times a year, when you have income with no withholding, like freelance or gig work. If you have both a job and a side gig, you might need both. The goal is the same: pay as you go so April does not hurt. Two systems, one goal.

Paying for childcare so you can work? The Child and Dependent Care Credit exists for exactly that. Daycare, after-school programs, summer day camp, even a babysitter so you can work, these can qualify. You will need the provider's name, address, and tax ID, so start collecting that now if you have not. This credit is nonrefundable, but it directly reduces what you owe. Working parents: do not file without checking this one.

Here is my annual PSA: do not wait until April to think about your taxes. The people who file in February get their refunds first, avoid the preparer rush, and have time to fix issues. The people who wait until April 14th get stress. If your documents are ready early, file early. If you are missing something, starting early gives you time to track it down. Your refund does not get bigger by waiting. File early, breathe easy.

Got a letter from the IRS? Do not panic and do not throw it away. Most IRS letters are routine: a math correction, a missing form, a verification request. Open it, read the whole thing, note the deadline, and then call your preparer. What you should NOT do is ignore it or assume the worst. Nine times out of ten it is fixable with a simple response. I handle these for clients all the time. A letter is information, not a verdict.

The Child Tax Credit can be worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child, and part of it may be refundable, which means you could get money back even if you owe zero tax. The rules have age limits and income phaseouts, and they change more often than people realize. If you had a baby in 2025, congratulations, and yes, that counts for the full year. New parents miss this all the time. Make sure your preparer knows about every child in the house.

To the moms doing it all: working, raising kids, keeping the house running, and still trying to build something bigger. I am one of you. Four kids, a business, and a calendar that never stops. Some days are chaos. But every return I finish, every client I help, is proof that we can do hard things. If nobody told you today: you are doing an amazing job. Keep going.
