ON THIS DAY IN 1888, a torrential rain storm slammed the east coast. The rain turned to snow the next day becoming "The Great Blizzard of '88." Upwards of 50 inches of snow fell from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine and the daytime temperature averaged 9 degrees - the coldest, ever, for March. This, together with 45mph sustained winds created drifts of 50' and higher that buried 3 story homes in New England.

"The Great White Hurricane" resulted in at least 400 deaths, 200 of which were in New York City which was completely immobilized for a week.

ON THIS DAY in 1892, Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" premiered at St. Petersburg's Maryinksy Theatre. It wasn't particularly well-received. The audience enjoyed the drama and action of the first act, but found the second, a series of themed dances, lacking. The ballet was rarely performed. The complete ballet was first performed in the US on Christmas Eve in 1944. In the 1960's, it started to grow into the Christmas tradition that we now know and love.

ON THIS DAY in 1990, the pop group, Milli Vanilli lost their 1989 Grammy for Best New Artist when it was leaked to the press that their songs were recorded by different singers. Along with the loss of their Grammy, many lawsuits were filed. The duo initially denied the allegations but later admitted to the scandal. Apparently, they didn't "Blame it on the Rain." hehehe
