This is a Big Week at Naveen Jindal School of Management, UT Dallas. First, I was honored to participate in a discussion sponsored by The Dialogue Society (TDS) with City of Richardson Texas City Council Member Dan F. Barrios Jr. The University of Texas at Dallas students Ahsen Akkus and moderated by Celil Akgobek Such a well-run event about understanding and communicating with each other. Loved seeing my fellow JSOM colleagues Maria Hasenhuttl Greg Dess Liping Ma, Ph.D. Sethi and some special students including Zeliha Şenlik Sephanit Nekeatibeb and

TODAY and TOMORROW our negotiation and dispute resolution students present their final project showing how they “Go Negotiate for Good.” They used their negotiation skills in real-life application to benefit non-profit and campus organizations like The Birthday Party Project Single Parent Advocate Dress for Success Worldwide Richardson Animal Shelter North Texas Food Bank Comet Cupboard for Pups

I’ll share their results later this week.

Which of my friends are Naveen Jindal School of Management - UT Dallas Alums? Did you show up to support our University of Texas at Dallas Comets? Such a great event! Thank you to the leaders and volunteers for putting on such a great event!

A few months ago, I responded to an “urgent” request for a negotiation expert for a keynote speech. It seemed we were the perfect fit. They dealt in complex sales, had competition, and the event was in the DFW area. Woo hoo!

There were several positive calls, two on-line meetings with the other “deciders” involved, and a package of books. After researching, a ton of emails providing more information, fee discussions, and a formal write-up confirming our agreement, I thought the deal was sealed.

Instead, I heard the dreaded line. “OK. Now, we’ll share all this with the owner for his thoughts.” Yep, the dreaded tactic: higher authority.

Hang on. When we spoke about the selection process, this last CEO approval wasn’t mentioned.

That said, I’m not sure I asked, “Who besides yourself will be making this decision.” After meeting with two other decision makers, I thought we were green lighted.

You can already guess the outcome, can’t you? The CEO had his own selection determined. Of course, my contact was ethical and kind when sharing the bad news. Future business may occur with this group, but it won’t be at this conference.

❓When have you worked hard to provide value in a deal, only to see the opportunity evaporate?

❓What do you do if you don’t land a deal that seems to be a fit?

❓How do you approach your next negotiation with the lessons you’ve learned?

You don’t come to an agreement with all of the deals presented. BUT you come to no agreements if you don’t try.

Go (and keep) Negotiating!

❓Have you ever had days where you weren’t sure if you should stay the course or make a u-turn and go in a completely different direction?

Yesterday was one of the most memorable speeches of my life at Texas Tech University. Sunday after hours of delays, I was working on ways to get to Lubbock and my options continue to narrow.

It was very clear my fellow passengers and I were not in control of much. Several passengers started loudly demanding information from the gate agents. Turns out that is not the way to endear yourself or get a pilot and crew who have timed out to fly a plane.

I bought some snacks, talked to customer service, and went to work in a corner on my computer.

Bonus: I spoke with Red Raider Football star Jacob Rodriguez!

Fortunately, I was rebooked in the last seat of the last plane. After several delays, I arrived at the hotel 1 am. Woo hoo!

Flying later was a much better solution than my other two options: drive the five hours or hire someone to drive me.

I spoke the next morning and for lunch. Appropriately, our luncheon topic was “Positivity Negotiating the Change You Didn’t Want.”

Speaking for leaders in the President’s Leadership Initiative and the alumni luncheon that followed was a full circle moment in time. It was an opportunity to let them know what their leadership meant to our family.

Later, I worked in the same conference room where I had interviewed and been chosen to lead the Student Foundation, now the Student Alumni Board.

The TSA agent before my last flight said, “I see three flights you’re booked on today. Which is it?”

My answer? “It doesn’t matter. I’m happy I made it here. Please help me get back home. More importantly, thank you for showing up to work today.”

❓If you were to participate in a tradeshow featuring your services, which event would you attend? What services would you showcase? How would you pick a theme and message to represent you or your organization’s value?
❓Which visuals and materials would be required? How would you make sure they arrived safely, were set up correctly, and worked the entire time?
❓If others were in charge of powerfully promoting your offerings, what would you instruct them to highlight or avoid? How would evaluate if their efforts were successful?

This week, the exhibition professionals at hashtag , are taking a few days to work on their industry knowledge, as well as their own development. Their ability to negotiate complex trade shows with multiple details, items of consideration, and logistics is impressive. However, their real skill comes from dealing with very different people inside and outside organizations is the most impressive.

In beautiful Tampa, we discussed “Don’t Hesitate: Negotiate!” and “Positively Negotiate Drama.” These dedicated professionals teach me something every time we meet. Think of it as an evolution of face-to-face marketing. This year we focused on our superpowers and bringing those gifts to the table.

Congratulations to the new CTSMs and those who upgraded their certification level through more training. It was a terrific reception hosted by Deckel & Moneypenny! It was fun to listen to Steve Deckel’s insights.

Thank you Monica Myhill for your ongoing support. Loved meeting you in person Chris Bruce, CTSM Diamond and Carly Homan, MBA, BS, CTSM! Your information was so valuable!

Negotiating Change Can Be Messy

Right now, my clients are asking me to address how to positively negotiate change. The “positively” piece of that sentence can be the toughest.

Late last year, our hot water created a flood. At the beginning of this year, we used that disruption to create a better environment. We didn’t just want to fix the damage, we wanted to take the opportunity to upgrade our living space.

If you have ever remodeled anything, you know it is messy. There are others around, lots of noise, dust, and disruption.

Like my clients, we initiated this change. There are fabulous and skilled professionals helping us. AND we know the result will be great. But … it is still a challenge to deal with timing, delivery, noise, and matters outside your control.

❓What change are you noticing or experiencing now?
❓How are you positively addressing that experience?
❓What tips do you have on dealing with that situation?

I’ll update with additional suggestions later.

.Imagine being able to bounce an idea off of a group of dedicated individuals who develop it for you. They consider the target audience, design communications, and share where a project or program could be upgraded.

Now, consider that you would not have to pay these consultants for their advice. In fact, their payment is experience on the project and relationships built with you and others.

❓What idea would you share?
❓What would be possible?
❓How would you employ their energy and knowledge?

Last Fall, my more than 160 Naveen Jindal School of Management, UT Dallas students participated in a negotiation project that benefited 23 non-profit organizations.

However, BEFORE the students received the project, it was developed and refined through a group of volunteers in a Short-term Working Group (SWG). The SWG program is designed to provide The University of Texas at Dallas students an opportunity to work closely with a faculty member on a targeted project.

Faculty members propose projects and welcome ~10 students to join them for four in-person sessions to complete a project. Students who complete a SWG program will gain skills, develop a professional relationship with a faculty member, meet other UTD students, and receive a digital badge showcasing skills learned over the course of the SWG.

Short-term Working Groups teach students skills that build their confidence and often could be applied to their post-graduate careers. What made it special was that two of my former students Aiswarya Atluri and Sree Nimmalagadda participated. Also, students from other studies were involved. Many had never stepped foot in the business school.

This week we celebrated the projects and people involved in the SWGs. And, wow, was there SWAG! Here is a video featuring the program and other projects https://lnkd.in/gD2pSBjx

Thank you Maria Hasenhuttl for introducing me to this concept. Congratulations to Salena Brody, Ph.D. and the SWG team for all you do to give UTD students and faculty this valuable experience.

Sweet Home Alabama - Bankers Are Real Dealmakers

Terrific time talking about negotiations with the leaders of the B2L program with the Alabama Bankers Association. Appreciate the management of the brilliant Ashley Thomas. Her leadership and touch is apparent in so many ways. Thank you Barry Harp for the pictures.

❓How has a banker played a positive role in your business?
❓What deals are made possible through a strong banking relationship?

Huge shout out to my friends Alyson Van Hooser, CSP Susan Van Hooser and Phillip Van Hooser, CSP CPAE for the introduction. Alabama is beautiful and will be tough to leave.
