Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. is proud to support Melody of Hope in connection with North Texas Giving Day and the organization’s upcoming Music on Main Street event in October.

C. John Scheef III helped facilitate Scheef & Stone’s partnership with Melody of Hope in support of its mission to bring hope to North Texas communities through the power of music.

Melody of Hope supports and advocates for local nonprofit organizations throughout North Texas through live music programs and showcases featuring up-and-coming artists. This year, the organization is supporting 32 local nonprofits and providing more than 100 musical performances at their events free of charge, while also creating opportunities for local artists and helping nonprofits expand their reach, fundraising efforts, and volunteer networks.

Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. is proud to have had Partner Kate Valent participate as a speaker at TexasBarCLE’s 25th Annual Advanced In-House Counsel Course, held last week at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio.

Kate joined Dena DeNooyer Stroh of the North Texas Tollway Authority for a session titled “Construction Law: Top 10 Things to Be Worried About,” addressing key construction-law issues and risks relevant to in-house counsel.
The two-day course, cosponsored by the Business Law & Corporate Counsel Sections of the State Bar of Texas, brought together attorneys for continuing legal education and discussion on issues affecting today’s in-house legal teams, including artificial intelligence, corporate governance, employment law, supply chain risk, litigation, executive compensation, real estate, and contract drafting.

Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. was also proud to support the program as a sponsor.

We thank TexasBarCLE and the State Bar of Texas for the opportunity to contribute to this year's course and appreciate Kate's continued engagement in advancing conversations within the legal profession.

As part of Scheef & Stone, L.L.P.’s Women’s Equality Day Spotlight Series, we are proud to feature Heather Kay and her perspective on the women who have influenced her career, the advantages women bring to the legal profession, and the importance of finding balance along the way.

Heather credits the women attorneys at Scheef & Stone as an ongoing source of inspiration, and for Heather, being a woman in law brings a valuable perspective to the profession.

“We also bring a varied mindset to the practice of law,” she says, noting that women naturally learn to juggle the various facets of life.

Heather was initially drawn to the public-service aspect of practicing law, having grown up in a family of service members. Today, through her banking and real estate practice, she serves clients differently, helping businesses grow through each transaction and seeing their projects come to fruition.

Her advice to the next generation of women leaders is simple: appreciate the seasons of your career and make time to enjoy them.

“The practice of law is never consistent, so take time to enjoy the slow times and truly appreciate the little things that life has to offer.”

Heather’s perspective is a reminder that a meaningful legal career is not defined solely by professional accomplishments, but also by the relationships, perspectives, and experiences that shape the journey.

What makes a great lawyer? For Jane Taber, the answer goes beyond legal knowledge and experience.

As part of our Women's Equality Day Spotlight Series, we’re highlighting Jane’s perspective on the qualities that can elevate a good lawyer into a great one: compassion, assertiveness, and creativity.

Jane believes compassion is essential to understanding a client’s perspective and the positions of everyone involved in a legal matter. By putting herself in others’ shoes, she says, a lawyer can better anticipate what comes next and develop solutions that truly serve the client.

She also draws an important distinction between assertiveness and aggressiveness. Great lawyers can advocate for their positions and make themselves heard while remaining professional and respectful of others.

Finally, Jane points to creativity. Every client, set of facts, and legal challenge is different, requiring lawyers to look at problems from multiple angles and develop solutions tailored to the circumstances.

Her philosophy reflects an approach to practicing law that is grounded not only in legal skill, but also in understanding people, listening carefully, and finding thoughtful ways forward.

Some careers are shaped by the opportunities we receive. Others are shaped by the people who believe in us along the way.

As part of our Women's Equality Day Spotlight Series, we are proud to recognize Kate Valent, whose legal career has been strengthened by the mentors, colleagues, and friends who invested in her growth from associate to equity partner at Scheef & Stone, L.L.P.

Kate credits Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. attorneys C. John Scheef III, Jim Pikl, and Mitch Little for their guidance, patience, and mentorship throughout her career. She also reflects on the many women in the construction bar who generously shared their knowledge and encouraged her as she built her practice.

One lesson, in particular, has stayed with her over the years.

Attorney Cathy Altman often said there is "plenty of pie for everyone." That philosophy of collaboration over competition continues to influence the way Kate approaches relationships within the legal profession.

Kate is also grateful for the mentorship of Colbie Brazell, Michelle Rieger, Kristen Sherwin, Jennifer Edgeworth, and Dena Stroh, whose support and encouragement helped shape both her career and her perspective.

"I am deeply thankful for each of these individuals and for the many others who have contributed to my growth, success, and enjoyment of this profession. Their generosity, support, and friendship have made all the difference in my journey."

Her story is a reminder that success is rarely achieved alone, and that investing in others helps strengthen the legal profession for everyone.

Some careers are built by following a path. Others are built by creating one.

As part of our Women's Equality Day spotlight series, we are proud to recognize Shirley Rose, whose legal career has been defined by perseverance, excellence, and a willingness to break barriers.

In 2000, Shirley became the youngest person ever admitted as a Barrister of the High Court of South Africa; a distinction she believes she still holds today. Years later, she continued making history when she became one of the first women, and the youngest female at the time, appointed as an Acting Judge of the High Court of South Africa, the equivalent of a federal court in the United States.

Those achievements did not come without challenges. Early in her career, Shirley was told that "women were never meant to be at the bar." Rather than allowing those attitudes to define her path, she relied on determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Throughout her journey, Shirley credits several mentors who helped shape her career, including Judge Allan Horwitz, Judge Brian Spilg, Lucas van Tonder S.C., and, after beginning her practice in Texas, Scheef & Stone attorneys Kate Valent and Brent Kugler.

Today, Shirley encourages young women entering the profession to embrace their strengths and remain authentic to themselves.

"Do not try to be like a man. Stand in your feminine power and support the women around you."

Her story serves as a powerful reminder that barriers can be broken, expectations can be challenged, and success comes from staying true to who you are.

Today, we welcome Brendan Bell back to the firm as a Law Clerk in the Dallas office.

Brendan previously served as a Law Clerk with Scheef & Stone, L.L.P. and will rejoin the firm on August 17 as he awaits the results of the Texas Bar Exam this fall.

A graduate of SMU Dedman School of Law, Brendan brings a strong academic background and firsthand experience working alongside the firm's attorneys. We are excited to welcome him back and look forward to supporting him as he begins this next chapter of his legal career.
