One of the biggest mistakes I see small business owners make is waiting until tax season to think about taxes.

By the time February or March rolls around, most of the decisions that affect your tax liability have already been made.

As someone who works with entrepreneurs every day, here are a few truths many small businesses don’t realize:

1️⃣ Your bookkeeping determines your tax outcome.
Messy books lead to missed deductions, inaccurate filings, and sometimes unnecessary tax bills.

2️⃣ Not every expense is automatically deductible.
Just because you paid for something in your business doesn’t mean it qualifies. Documentation and proper categorization matter.

3️⃣ Your business structure affects your taxes.

March Is a Critical Month for Business Owners

Many business owners don’t realize that March 15 is one of the most important tax deadlines of the year.

If you operate as an S-Corporation or Partnership, this date matters.

📌 Key Federal Deadlines:

• March 15 – Filing deadline for S-Corporation tax returns
• March 15 – Filing deadline for Partnership tax returns
• March 15 – Last day to file an extension for these entities

If an extension is filed, the extended filing deadline moves to September 15.

The problem I see every year is that many business owners wait until the last minute and realize they don’t have their books organized, expenses categorized, or financials ready.
