Our President, Rochelle Garza, said it clearly: "Camp East Montana has had far too many dangerous and deadly consequences." That’s why we filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the inhumane conditions at Camp East Montana in El Paso, the nation’s largest detention center. People detained here are experiencing dehumanizing conditions, and that cannot continue.

For our clients and their loved ones, Civil Rights Project and our partners are working to hold those behind Camp East Montana accountable for their negligence and harm. Because one should never have to live in these

The court's decision is disappointing and out of step with the Constitution and the unbroken practice of other courts. S.B. 4 will devastate our communities and families by turning our state's legal system into an unconstitutional weapon to surveil, harass, and harm Texans based on their perceived immigration status.

This is not what our criminal justice system is for, and contrary to the oath officials and officers swore to the Constitution.

We encourage all Texans, especially those who fear racial profiling under S.B. 4, to remember their rights and stay safe. We will continue to fight against this abhorrent and blatantly illegal law.

Compassionate release is a common process that allows elderly and ill people in prison to be released and placed in a more suitable environment. These programs recognize that incarcerating elderly people or people with particular health issues is a disservice to them, to the prison system, and to the public at large. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has a compassionate release program called Medically Recommended Intensive Supervision (MRIS), but it is highly underutilized.

📊 In fiscal year 2023, out of the 3,084 cases screened, only 27 - less than 1% - were approved for release.

Our new report examines the MRIS program’s shortcomings and advocates for reforms to increase the number of vulnerable individuals who are released from prison.

This week, I had the opportunity to co-facilitate The People’s Hearing on Immigration Enforcement: Chicago. Alongside Former Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Marty Castro, I listened to nearly five hours of testimony from community members, advocates, and families impacted by federal immigration enforcement. What I learned about Operation Midway Blitz and its aftermath is going to weigh heavily on both my mind and my heart for years to come.

As a mom, a border resident, and an American, we owe it to each other to call out these injustices — the racial profiling of Latinos — and to stand against the targeting of our immigrant brothers and sisters. We must document and preserve the facts behind Operation Midway Blitz to ensure that the record fully reflects the harm that was inflicted. Communities across Illinois deserve accountability from the federal government, DHS leadership, and all those who egregiously violated and continue violating Chicagoans and their constitutional rights.

Many thanks to the Hispanic Federation, Latino Victory, the Miranda Family, UIC Law, event organizers, and all those involved for the invitation. To read the full article and learn more, visit the link in my bio.

Over Mother’s Day weekend, I thought about all of the mothers and mother figures out there who dedicate everything to their families and children, tirelessly advocating for their futures. Including the mothers in detention and the mothers who continue to show up even when the system lets them down.

Every fight for civil rights, immigration, and reproductive justice is a fight for mothers, for our children, and for the future we’re building.

Happy Mother’s Day to all, and especially to my own mom who continues to teach me so much. 💐

TCRP’s Border Tour was created to confront the realities shaping life in South Texas. To each and every community member, speaker, host, organizer, partner, and participant, thank you. Your stories and your presence made our first-ever Border Tour possible!

This was only the beginning. We remain committed to continuing this work and building out future Border Tour programming that keeps truth at the center and community at the heart of our fight for justice.
