October is Domestic Violence awareness month, and I couldn’t let it pass me by without remembering why I do what I do.
In 2013, I packed my fiat to the brim with all my earthly possessions and made the trek from Miami to New Orleans. I had my heart set on the sports law program at Tulane.
Sara Lamont changed my life, both in the way she lived and died. She was ambitious and brilliant, young and full of hopes and dreams. Top of our class. Kind to everyone she met.
Our 2L year, Sara was murdered by her then boyfriend. While there were some red flags, they weren’t physical. It was in the way he talked to her, the way he controlled her, and the way he isolated her. The way he resented her success.
I’d give anything to have Sara here, and I know her parents would too. I like to believe that I am carrying on her legacy in my work. In being an advocate in a court system that fails survivors way too often.
I say this all to say that I SEE you, I will fight for you, I will never stop fighting, because I care. I won’t always get it right, but I will always come from a place of admiration and empathy for those of you who face the unthinkable. You are survivors! 💜
