What to Do If You Receive an IRS Identity Verification Letter (5071C, 4883C, or 5747C)
If you receive an IRS identity verification letter, it means the IRS needs to confirm your identity before processing your tax return. Here’s what you should do:
1. Read the Letter Carefully
• The letter will specify the type of verification needed and provide instructions.
• Common letters include 5071C, 4883C, or 5747C.
2. Verify Your Identity Online (Preferred Method)
• Go to the IRS Identity Verification Service at www.irs.gov/verifyreturn.
• Follow the steps to verify your identity using your tax return and personal information.
3. Verify by Phone (If Online Is Not an Option)
• The letter will include a phone number to call. Be prepared with:
• The letter itself
• Your tax return details (prior year and current year)
• Personal identification (Social Security number, W-2, etc.)
4. Visit an IRS Office (If Required)
• Some letters, like 5747C, may require an in-person visit to an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.
• Schedule an appointment and bring two forms of ID.
5. Wait for IRS Processing
• After verification, the IRS will continue processing your return. It may take up to 9 weeks to receive your refund.
⚠ Important:
• Do not ignore the letter—your refund won’t be processed until you verify your identity.
• Beware of scams—the IRS will never ask for identity verification via email, text, or social media.
