Attic insulation plays a critical role in both energy efficiency and moisture control. Proper insulation levels help minimize heat transfer and reduce the likelihood of condensation-related mold growth in attic spaces. As warm, conditioned air naturally rises through a structure (the stack effect), insulation acts as a thermal barrier, slowing heat loss into the attic.

When insulation is inadequate or missing, heat and air movement increase significantly. The resulting influx of warm, moisture-laden air can condense on cold roof sheathing surfaces, creating the damp conditions necessary for microbial growth. This condensation-driven moisture accumulation is a primary contributor to attic mold issues.

It is essential to verify that insulation is evenly distributed and meets recommended R-value requirements across the entire attic floor, with particular attention to eave and north-facing sections, where temperatures tend to be lower and condensation risk is higher.

What Causes Attic Mold and How to Avoid it? The picture shows a ridge vent with static vents and electric vents. This is a big no-no! More is never better when it comes to ventilation. A ridge vent is the current best attic venting system (couples with soffit vents). The others work fine as well but you should only choose ONE for the top of your roof!! Not only will multiple types of vents cause mold, it will ruin your shingles and the underying sheating.

Recent before / after photos.
Mold proliferation in attics is often linked to inadequate ventilation. This job was quoted by my competitor at twice the price I was able to do it. Suffice it to say, they were very pleased!

It’s that time of year again. Most homes in our area have basements and get humid in the summer. Set your dehumidifier to under 50% humidity (mines at 35%). If you don’t have a hose to drain connection, check on the bucket every other day or so and empty.
Additional tips to stop mold: Many folks do not keep their vents open in their basement. It’s important to keep air circulating. Open them! Like my page if you thought this was helpful!

PSA : Is mold remediation or removal covered by insurance?

Remediation and removal of mold won't be covered by your homeowners insurance unless the mold resulted from a covered peril, and coverage is often limited. Covered peril examples are if you had a fire and the water used by the firefighters caused mold in the aftermath.

More often, if you try to make a mold claim, insurance companies will drop you. Moreover, the claim goes into a database that is shared with other insurance companies, effectively blacklisting your home. So DO NOT make a claim is the best practice.

On porous material like wood and drywall, bleach quickly dries off on the surface and will not reach into the deeper part of the material to the mold's root. So, in a few days or weeks, the mold regains its color and grows back to become even worse than it was before you applied the bleach. It is okay to treat mold on non-porous materials like sinks, glass and tile.
