Probate is a court process authorizing a personal representative to handle an estate, including resolving debts, inventorying assets and distributing the estate.
Many everyday assets often pass to the next owner without probate. Beneficiary designations on life insurance policies and retirement accounts are typically sent to the people named as beneficiaries. Payable-on-death and transfer-on-death paperwork works similarly for bank and brokerage accounts. Documents including deeds and agreements, recorded on real property, can also create efficient transfers.
How each of your assets is titled today may affect how that property is transferred to someone else later. Questions about your estate plan? Call Douglass Law PLLC at 208-746-0344. For more information about our firm, please visit douglasslawfirm.net.
