15 years in the making… and it’s finally here. 🎉

I am so excited to officially launch the Law Practice Training Academy!

For the last 15 years, I’ve been building a law firm, learning what works, learning what absolutely does not, and figuring out how to create better systems, stronger teams, and a business that can grow without everything falling on the owner.

LPTA was created to share those lessons and help other solo and small firm owners build better law firms too.

And this week feels like the perfect way to kick it off:

✨ Our website is officially LIVE
✨ Our programs are open
✨ And we’re exhibiting at the WealthCounsel Symposium at the Bellagio in Las Vegas

It is honestly a little surreal to see this idea come to life after so many years.

I am beyond excited for this next chapter and so grateful for everyone who has encouraged me along the way.

Law Practice Training Academy is officially here. 💚

This may be hard to hear, but it needs to be said.

Your family should not always get the leftovers of you.

The leftover energy.
The leftover patience.
The leftover attention.
The leftover version of yourself after the firm has taken everything else.

You started your firm for a reason.

Maybe you wanted freedom.

Maybe you wanted control.

Maybe you wanted more income.

Maybe you wanted to serve clients differently.

Maybe you wanted to build something meaningful for your family.

But somewhere along the way, the firm can start taking more than it gives.

And when that happens, it is time to make changes.

Not because you failed.

Because you are the owner.

You get to decide how this business is built.

You can create systems.

You can hire help.

You can train your team.

You can stop doing work you hate.

You can protect your schedule.

You can build a firm that serves your clients well without stealing you from the people you love most.

It is okay to change.

Most law firm owners build their calendar backward.

They put in court dates.
Client meetings.
Consultations.
Deadlines.
Staff questions.
Administrative work.
Everyone else’s urgency.

And then, whatever scraps are left over, they try to give to their family.

That is how your life starts getting built around your business.

But it does not have to stay that way.

You can start by protecting what matters first.

Family dinner.
Kids’ activities.
Vacations.
Mornings.
Work blocks.
Thinking time.
Rest.
Appointments.
The things you would never cancel on someone you love.

Treat yourself like someone you refuse to cancel on.

Then build the firm around that.

Will there be emergencies? Of course.

But emergencies should not be the business model.

You are allowed to control more of your schedule than you think.

That starts by deciding your life matters enough to go on the calendar first.

One of the biggest mistakes law firm owners make is rushing the things that create freedom later.

They rush hiring.

They rush training.

They rush delegation.

They rush systems.

Then they wonder why nothing sticks.

The wrong hire creates more work.

Poor training creates more questions.

No systems create more chaos.

Delegation without clarity creates more frustration.

This is why I believe you have to go slow to go fast.

Take the time to hire the right person.

Take the time to train them well.

Take the time to write down the process.

Take the time to explain what “done right” actually means.

Take the time to build the foundation.

Because when you skip those steps, you do not save time.

You create future fires.

A law firm that runs without you is not built in one dramatic overhaul.

It is built through intentional decisions, repeated over time.

One system.

One hire.

One process.

One boundary.

One better decision at a time.

Your law firm should not only make money when you are physically there holding it together.

That is one of the hardest truths for many solo and small firm attorneys to face.

Because from the outside, things may look fine.

The firm is making money.
The clients are coming in.
The work is getting done.
The calendar is full.

But behind the scenes?

You are exhausted.

You cannot step away.
You cannot fully unplug.
You cannot take a real vacation.
You cannot get sick without panic.
You cannot focus because everyone needs something from you.

That is not freedom.

That is a business built around your constant availability.

And it is not sustainable forever.

The good news is, you do not have to fix everything at once.

Start with one process.

Write down one step.

Train one person.

Delegate one task.

Protect one block of time.

Small changes build the foundation for a firm that can actually support your life.

Here is a question every law firm owner should be able to answer:

Could your firm run without you?

Not forever.

Not perfectly.

But could it function if you were gone for a few days?

Could your team answer basic questions?
Could new clients still be handled properly?
Could files keep moving?
Could payments still be collected?
Could the office still operate?
Could you take a real vacation without checking email every hour?

For many solo and small firm attorneys, the honest answer is no.

And that is not because they are bad business owners.

It is because they built the firm around themselves.

Their knowledge.
Their decisions.
Their memory.
Their availability.
Their constant presence.

That may work for a while.

But eventually, it becomes the thing that traps you.

The goal is not to disappear from your firm.

The goal is to build a firm that does not require you to personally hold every piece together.

I created a quick assessment to help you see where your firm may be depending too heavily on you.

Download the assessment and find out whether your firm could actually run without you.

Attorneys, I need you to hear this:

You have to stop doing all the things someone else could be doing.

Not because you are too good for them.

Because your time, energy, and attention are limited.

If you are answering every phone call, chasing every document, formatting every letter, managing every tiny admin task, and solving every small problem, you are using attorney-level brainpower on work that does not require you.

And then you wonder why you are exhausted.

You wonder why you cannot get to the strategic work.

You wonder why you are working late again.

You wonder why your family gets the tired version of you.

Delegation is not just about getting tasks off your plate.

It is about protecting your ability to lead.

Start simple.

Write down everything you do in a week.

Then highlight only the things that truly require you as the attorney.

Be honest.

That list is probably shorter than you think.

Follow Law Practice Training Academy for practical steps to stop being the bottleneck in your own firm.

What is one task you know you should not still be doing?

It is okay to change the kind of work you take.

It is okay to stop accepting the cases you hate.

It is okay to admit that the way you built your firm in the beginning is not the way you want to keep running it forever.

It is okay to say:

“This used to work for me, but it does not work for my life anymore.”

So many attorneys keep building a practice around what they think they “should” do.

They take the cases someone told them they should take.

They use a billing model someone told them was normal.

They work the hours they think make them look successful.

They keep saying yes because that is how they have always done it.

But you are allowed to pause and ask:

What work do I actually enjoy?
What work is actually profitable?
What clients do I want more of?
What kind of life am I trying to build?
What needs to change so this firm supports that life?

You are not stuck just because this is how you started.

It is okay to change.

Follow Law Practice Training Academy if you are ready to build a law firm that works for your actual life.

What is one thing in your firm you would change if you gave yourself permission?

There is not enough of you to go around when your firm depends on you for everything.

Not enough for the clients.
Not enough for the team.
Not enough for the emails.
Not enough for the phone calls.
Not enough for the deadlines.
Not enough for your spouse.
Not enough for your kids.
Not enough for yourself.

And eventually, you start feeling like you are failing everywhere.

You are at work thinking about your family.

You are with your family thinking about work.

You are trying to be a good attorney, a good business owner, a good parent, a good spouse, a good leader, and a good human.

But the truth is, the problem may not be you.

The problem may be the way the firm is built.

If everything requires your personal attention, your personal approval, your personal memory, and your personal energy, then of course you are exhausted.

That is not weakness.

That is a systems problem.

And systems can be changed.

Your firm can be built differently.

Follow Law Practice Training Academy for more practical ways to build your business around your life.

A lot of attorneys wear “I’m busy” like it is a badge of honor.

“I’m buried.”
“There is so much going on.”
“I’m slammed.”
“I don’t have time.”
“I am just putting out fires all day.”

I say this with love:

That is not proof that your firm is successful.

It may be proof that your firm needs better systems.

Being busy is not the goal.

Being profitable, present, focused, and in control of your time is the goal.

Because when every day is spent running from one emergency to the next, you are not really leading your firm.

You are reacting to it.

And that gets exhausting.

You cannot build the life you want if your calendar is constantly controlled by clients, emails, staff questions, court deadlines, and last-minute chaos.

At some point, you have to stop and ask:

Is this the law firm I actually wanted to build?

Or did I accidentally build a job that needs me every second of the day?

Follow Law Practice Training Academy for more real conversations about building a better law firm.

Be honest: How often is your default answer, “I’m just so busy”?
