The checklist starts here:
Step 1: Confirm your one-year filing deadline.
This is the most urgent item on the list. If you arrived in the U.S. more than a year ago and haven't filed yet, this needs to be addressed before anything else.
Step 2: Complete Form I-589 in full.
Every section. Not just the ones that feel relevant. Incomplete travel history and inconsistent dates are among the most common reasons cases get flagged.
Step 3: Gather every identity document you have access to.
Passport, birth certificate, national ID, Form I-94, marriage or divorce certificates. If a document is unavailable, be ready to explain why.
