A few thoughtful steps upfront can help you feel more informed, confident, and ready for what comes next.

Here are 3 things I recommend considering before you begin the process:

1️⃣ Understand your finances — gather important documents and get a clear picture of your assets, expenses, and accounts.

2️⃣ Think about your goals — not just what you want to happen today, but what will set you up for the future.

3️⃣ Get informed about your options — every family is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to divorce.

Divorce is a major life transition. The decisions you make early on can shape the path forward.

There's a new corner of the internet I'd love for you to visit...

My website is officially live.

This has been months in the making, and I'm excited to finally have a place that reflects how I think about family law.

You'll also find information about my practice, speaking engagements, media appearances, and resources I hope you'll find useful.

Click the link in my bio and take a look when you have a minute. I'd love to hear what you think.

Every family law case is different because every family is different.

Over the years, I've learned that the best path forward rarely ever has to be the loudest or the most aggressive; it's the one that's thoughtfully tailored to the person sitting across from you. It’s about watching and listening and asking thoughtful questions. It’s never about jumping in without a plan. The best family law attorneys probe and dissect and adapt. I’ve learned this from those who have mentored me and I try to impart the same lessons on those whom I’ve similarly mentored.

Through it all, my plan is always the same: to help clients make decisions that support the life they're building next. That doesn’t change, whether it’s the initial consultation or the days leading up to the entry of a final agreement.

Thank you to Sheridan Road | Posts by Editor-in-Chief Dustin O’Regan and JWC Media Group for allowing me talk about the work that continues to challenge and inspire me every day. I’m the lucky one.

When it comes to family law, the most important thing is keeping your children at the center of every decision.

What works well for one family may not work for another — and that’s okay.

The best parenting plan is one that supports your child’s needs, provides consistency, and helps both parents move forward with clear expectations. It’s not about keeping score or finding a one-size-fits-all schedule. It’s about creating a framework that allows your child to thrive.

Children grow, circumstances change, and parenting plans may need to evolve along the way. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a plan that gives your child the stability and support they need to thrive.

Choosing peace does not mean giving up. It does not mean your feelings are invalid. And it does not mean every situation is easy.

In family law matters, emotions often run high. Peace isn’t about pretending everything is okay. It’s about choosing a path forward with clarity, dignity, and purpose.

You are allowed to choose peace. And sometimes, it can be one of the strongest choices you make.

One of the things I appreciate most about this profession is that learning doesn’t stop once you pass the bar — or even decades into your career.

Not long ago, I received an email from an attorney who had attended one of my webinars. What stood out wasn’t just the kind note, It was that they practice employment law, not family law. They shared that the presentation had helped them “re-center on the fundamentals that make trial work effective and compelling.”

It was a good reminder that, while our practice areas may be different, the skills that make us better advocates often aren’t. Every attorney develops approaches, habits, and perspectives that someone else can learn from.

After more than 20 years in practice, I’ve found that the best lawyers never assume they’ve seen it all. We get better by staying open to new ideas, learning from one another, and being willing to share what’s worked for us. That’s one of the things I value most about this profession.

Your first summer after divorce can feel different. The traditions may have changed, the plans may look unfamiliar, and that can be hard.

But it can also be the beginning of something new.

Say yes to the dinner invitation. Take the trip. Try the hobby. Spend time with people who make you feel like yourself. It’s a great step toward creating a life of your own again.
