Usually when I say a week felt like a year, it’s because it was a long one. But at the National Family Law Trial Institute, the opposite is true — so much learning, growth, and perspective are packed into a single week that it’s hard to believe it only lasts a few days.

I continue to be amazed by the dedication each student brings in pursuit of becoming the best advocate they can be. It’s an intense and demanding week, but one that is incredibly rewarding for everyone involved.

Teaching alongside such talented professionals and watching these future trial lawyers challenge themselves so fully is deeply inspiring. Opportunities like this are a reminder of how meaningful mentorship, preparation, and thoughtful advocacy are in shaping the future of family law.

One of the benefits of a flexible work environment is the ability to start the day with intention. Quiet mornings, a well-organized to-do list, time with the pups, and another cup of coffee — small rituals that create the foundation for a productive day.

It may come as a surprise, but I don’t like people telling me what to do….

Except for a costume party. Tell me what the theme is, and I’m there. Hair, make up, and period appropriate garb? Check, check and check.

Kudos to my dear friend, law partner and Illinois chapter president elect Shana Vitek, who knows how to throw a party with class. Spending time with judges, my work family and other colleagues was the highlight of my weekend.
