WOMEN ON BIKES x BIKE LAW TAKEOVER DAY 4!

Women's Cycling Day is an important mission. It's the collective of stories, experiences, and women in the saddle that have voices, lessons, and unridden miles to share.

Today's SPOKESwoman is Nedra Deadwyler (Civil Bikes). You should read about her, learn from her, and schedule a ride with her for an intimate look into how each of us can be active participants in creating a safe, inclusive American bicycling culture.

WOMEN ON BIKES x Bike Law TAKEOVER, DAY 3, PART 2!

I cried writing this and re-reading it, too.

How easy it is to forget that for every time we're ambushed and hit over the head with information and advice, there are women like Kathryn Doornbos who quietly work behind the scenes, chipping away at the challenges and adversities imposed upon the cyclists in our communities who are most in need.

She is a dependable fixture in life and cycling advocacy who is constantly whispering encouragement, opportunity, and inclusion into every pedal stroke made and Birmingham city block ridden.

Kathryn, thank you for paving the way for the rest of us to be wheels down, heard, and SEEN.

Please read below. She's more than worth it.

Lauri Boxer-Macomber and Brian Weiss discuss the too common problem of victim-blaming of cyclists in police and media reports.

Victim blaming needs to be removed from media coverage of bike crashes. Watch our latest video on how media and law enforcement officers should treat crash reporting more fairly.

Another Fatality at a Deadly Charleston Intersection

Another pedestrian has been killed at the intersection of Coming Street and the Septima Clark Expressway (aka the “Crosstown”) in downtown Charleston, SC. The latest death is the result of a hit-and-run driver.

At this time the identity of the pedestrian is not known. What we do know is the intersection is unreasonably dangerous for pedestrians.

The Crosstown’s poor design and lack of safety infrastructure for pedestrians is appalling. At Coming Street the Crosstown is not so much an intersecting throughway as it is a launch pad to Interstate 26 or the Ravenel Bridge to Mount Pleasant.

This latest casualty comes nearly three years after 21-year-old Lindsey Ranz was killed by a driver in almost the exact same place. Another 21-year-old pedestrian was killed when struck by a Jeep at the intersection in November 2012.

The fatality rate at this intersection makes it, likely, one of the deadliest intersections in the world.

It’s too much. The City of Charleston must address this intersection for the safety of all of its residents and many visitors.

Anyone with information should call (843) 743-7200.
