A week into her fellowship at the Kathrine R. Everett Law Library, Emma Ray '22 is already tracking down every corner of the building, one curiosity at a time. 📚 As the library's first George A. Strait Fellow, a national program from the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), she's spending her time here building an experience shaped around her own questions, all while pursuing her graduate degree at UNC's School of Data and Information Sciences.

This summer, 2L Josh Romero spent his externship where reproductive medicine and law actually meet, working with the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Policy Center. 🩺⚖️

“It sharpened how I think about policy and gave me a clearer sense of how legal scholarship and clinical medicine inform each other,” Romero says. In a few months, that work continues from a new vantage point: he’ll travel to D.C. with ASRM to meet with members of Congress.

“This externship has helped clarify the kind of physician-attorney and advocate I want to become.”

Introducing the Class of 2029! The numbers are in, and this is one of the strongest incoming classes in Carolina Law history. 184 students were selected from over 3,400 applications, with a median LSAT of 170 and a median UGPA of 3.90. 📈

They’re coming from 27 states and D.C., 86 undergraduate schools, and 50 different majors, ages 21 to 43, with over half calling North Carolina home. “Top-flight students recognize that Carolina Law will provide them with the education and opportunities for success,” says Dean Andy Hessick. Welcome to the family, Class of 2029. 🩵

Orientation week successfully wrapped with the student org and resource fair, and a BBQ hosted by the Student Bar Association 🎉 SBA has been showing up all week for incoming students, making sure they felt like part of the Carolina Law family even before their first class.

Meet the Dean’s Fellows, the 2Ls and 3Ls making sure no incoming student feels like a stranger this orientation week. 🩵 These volunteers mentor incoming 1Ls, transfer students, and international students, sharing the advice they wish they’d had on day one and making the transition to law school feel a little less overwhelming.

Day one kicked off with Dean Andy Hessick’s first address as Carolina Law’s 15th dean, followed by a keynote from John Day ’81, president of the American College of Trial Lawyers, on what it takes to build a reputation that lasts a career. Then came the Carolina Commitment, administered by Chief Judge Samantha Cabe ’02, a moment that made it all feel real.

But this week hasn’t just been the big moments. It’s also meant real talk on the stuff that actually keeps students up at night: mental health support through CAPS, career planning with CDO, and financial aid and residency guidance, so the Class of 2029 walks in with a plan.

One week in, and it’s already clear: this class is being set up to succeed, both in and outside the classroom. 🤝
