Illini Federalist Society *2019-2020 Creative Publicity Award Winner and Chapter of the Year Finalist* *2018-2019 University of Illinois College of Law Program of Distinction Award Winner* *2017-2018 Chapter of the Year Finalist* *2016-2017 Most Improved Chapter Finalist*

The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the current state of the legal order. It is founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. The Society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities.

"Stare decisis is the doctrine that a court should rule the way a previous court ruled even when the judges of the second court disagree with the earlier ruling. This doctrine poses an obvious problem for an originalist judge or justice. If a previous judicial decision reached an outcome contrary to what the original meaning of the Constitution requires, the originalist judge or justice is bound to rule contrary to that original meaning. In this way, the doctrine of stare decisis puts the rule provided by previous judges above the rule provided by the text of the Constitution."
- Randy E. Barnett (from his most recent writing on the topic, found here: https://lawliberty.org/forum/stare-decisis-for-originalist-judges/)

In the last few years, "an astonishingly cross‐ideological cast of public interest organizations ranging from the ACLU and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Second Amendment Foundation" have been working together to end the doctrine of Qualified Immunity- but what is Qualified Immunity, and how is it that ideologically-diverse groups can come together on this issue?

The Illinois Federalist Society will host guest speaker Clark Neily of the Cato Institute to hear him address the issue of Qualified Immunity as it relates to police brutality. Our own Professor Margareth Etienne will join us to discuss!

In the spirit of our old in-person free lunch events, 13 lucky UIUC students who register ahead and attend this event will receive a $15 “lunch” giftcard from FedSoc!

Join the Illinois Federalist Society to hear Anya Bidwell share the life story of Elfie Gallun, a woman born in East Prussia in 1932. As a child, Gallun endured Hitler’s Germany, only to be trapped in Stalinist East Germany after the war. Gallun’s struggle for freedom stresses the importance and fragility of freedom and provides a perspective from one who viewed the United States as a beacon of liberty to oppressed peoples throughout the world.

Having grown up in the former Soviet Union herself, Anya shares a deep appreciation of the precious nature of liberty. At the age of 16, Anya left her native Kyrgyzstan to seek freedom and opportunity in America. Anya Bidwell is an attorney and became the third Elfie Gallun fellow in Liberty and the Constitution at the Institute for Justice in 2019.

Introducing our 2020-2021 Executive Board!

We also want to take the time to thank our current board, who spent a lot of time and energy putting together a fantastic lineup of events for this spring semester, many of which were canceled.

Thank you to the College of Law community for your incredible engagement and willingness to discuss important issues this past year. We averaged 81 attendants per speaker event in the fall semester!

We leave the club in good hands, and look forward to seeing many of you next year!
