We are thrilled to announce that Passamaquoddy basketmaker Gabriel Frey has been named a recipient of the 2025 Maine Craft Artist Award! Presented by , this distinguished honor recognizes artists who have made a significant and lasting impact on Maine’s craft community through their artistry, mentorship, and advocacy.

Highly celebrated for his finely crafted pack baskets and for his leadership in advancing the understanding of Indigenous craft traditions, Frey embodies a profound respect for the natural world and carries stories of cultural continuity, environmental stewardship, and familial knowledge.

Frey’s work will be featured in our upcoming exhibition, “Mawte: Bound Together,” opening November 19 at the Joan Dignam Schmaltz Gallery of Art in the Paul J. Schupf Art Center. Co-curated by Kendall DeBoer and Sarah Sockbeson, “Mawte” will present contemporary Wabanaki art that centers Indigenized methodologies and artistic expression. “Shared cultural context is something that binds us together,” Frey shared about his work in the show. “For Wabanaki people, our art, spirituality, and ways of knowing are all together. The pieces that I have created for this exhibition explore the intersection of these cultural expressions.”
