Cinematographer Alex De Pablo looks back on his experience with the Optimo Ultra 12x on the set of “El Ser Querido,” the new film from director Rodrigo Sorogoyen starring Javier Bardem and Vicky Luengo.

The story follows an international director returning to Spain to shoot a film about the Spanish Sahara, all while trying to rebuild his relationship with the daughter he once left behind. A film about family, memory, and the illusions we build around our own narrative.

To match this vision, Alex mixed an unusually wide range of formats over 9 weeks of shooting: black and white and color film in 65mm, Super 35, Super 16 and Super 8, alongside digital in Full Frame, Super 35 and 1/3 inch, combining spherical and anamorphic lenses throughout. One of the most demanding sequences involved an outdoor day scene shot over a full week with 6 cameras running simultaneously, with Alex himself operating one of them.

In the middle of this technical complexity, the Optimo Ultra 12x became a natural choice for its compatibility across formats. Alex highlights its stability throughout the zoom range, along with a look he describes as “sharp but not too much,” with natural color reproduction and pleasing skin tones.

The result is a visual language he calls “simultaneously minimalist and baroque,” shaped through close collaboration with director Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

The film premiered in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival and hits Spanish cinemas today !

In our latest interview, New Zealand-born cinematographer Callan Green ACS NZCS ( ) takes us behind the scenes of “P.O.N.I.E.S.”, Peacock’s new Cold War espionage thriller directed by Susanna Fogel and starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson.

Callan’s path into cinema started young: a second-hand stills camera at six years old, a 2nd AC role on The Lord of the Rings trilogy at seventeen, and a Masters in Cinematography from AFTRS that launched over a decade shooting music videos and commercials across Australia and beyond.

To capture the show’s 1970s-inspired visual language, Callan shot on the Sony VENICE in 3:2 full frame. He relied on the Angénieux Optimo Ultra 12x for the show’s most ambitious shot, a 21-foot techno crane move at the CIA Memorial Wall in Langley, starting on an extreme close-up of the memorial’s engraved stars before gradually revealing the two characters, ending on a wide shot. He also used the Optimo 19.5-94mm for intimate character moments and car-to-car work, alongside the Angénieux EZ-2.

For Callan, the zoom itself is part of the storytelling:
“A zoom can reveal information, bring us closer to a character or simply add energy to a scene.”

From a rehoused 1960s 12-120mm S16 to now owning his own Optimo Ultra 12x, Callan’s relationship with Angénieux has spanned his entire career.

For Belarusian-born cinematographer Nadzeya Mikhalchenkava, visual storytelling is inseparable from rhythm, movement, and emotion.

Based in Toronto, her path has taken her across France, Australia, China, Cambodia, the UK, and Canada, and her background as a musician and dancer shapes everything about the way she sees through a lens.

Her latest project, the music clip “A Cure For Loneliness” by CIGAR CLUB, gave her the rare opportunity to wear every creative hat at once: writing, directing, and shooting a world she describes as psychological, fragmented, and slightly surreal.

To navigate between sweeping exterior landscapes and intimate, stylised night scenes, Nadzeya chose the RED Komodo-X with the Angénieux EZ-1 and EZ-2 zooms, a pairing that kept the image polished and fluid across the video’s shifting visual worlds.

More than a technical challenge, this was a deeply personal project: “It was honestly a dream project for me, because I love magical realism and creating worlds that feel slightly dreamy or heightened, while still staying connected to real emotions.”
