Check on your pregnant friends… they’re probably doing something they’re not “supposed” to be doing😉

Pregnancy doesn’t mean you’re fragile or handicapped. Low risk pregnancies are usually allowed to continue doing the things they did pre-pregnancy. Also, listen to your body. If you feel like you can still run and workout, cool. If your body tells you to slow down and take a nap, you should also do that, too!

Yes… I continued eating sushi, traveling, jumping, mowing the lawn, staying active and yes I had a sip of a margarita on my due date LOL. I am built different. You can make decisions that feel best for you. Kicking that soccer ball probably got things going though 🥴🙃

Happy Mother’s Day🌷

These first moments meeting your baby, meeting your new self… the version of you that you didn’t know existed… what a privilege it is to go through birth and become a mom. Dads must be so jealous of our strength and beauty.

April Recap🩷

I had 1 mama have an April baby this year! She rocked her induction. Her “plan” turned into preferences like most birth plans do when she had high blood pressure at her 37 week appointment. Having a doula help you navigate that is super helpful because we’re not just there for physical support… the emotional and informational support a doula provides is even more important!

What a beautiful birth and a beautiful family. I’m so happy I met them, and now I take a few months off before Momo starts school. Doula life is fun and spontaneous and unpredictable… but not having my phone attached to my hip 24/7 has been amazing over the last month and I’m excited for this summer to be slower than last summer!

Best birth wishes to everyone having a baby in May!

March Recap💙💙🩷💙🩷

A friend of mine once said her provider said “this is going to mess up my stats” during her c-section and I think about that comment often. Did she think a c/s was that moms first choice, or her fault? The mom most definitely should have never heard that comment. If you want that providers name I will share it in private.

Most times, interventions lead to MORE interventions. It’s called “the cascade of intervention.” It’s never the moms fault, it’s the system we birth in, BUT you can educate yourself on interventions such as pitocin, having them break your water, epidurals… and YOU make the choice that feels best for you and your baby. This sounds outlandish to a lot of people “what do you mean, just listen to your doctors recommendations” I know is the common theme, but what those people don’t understand is most times it’s not individualized care. It’s because you’re X weeks, or labor hasn’t progressed in X amount of time, or simply because the 1 anestiologist is available at this very moment.

I love looking back on my “stats” and seeing how things correlate. Everyone who had AROM (artificial rupture of membranes) this month also got an epidural. Dang did them breaking their water ramp up the intensity. I’m not sure how those contractions feel because mine has always broken at 10cm! (Which just so you know, you can say no, and wait for it to break in its own time.)

My job as a doula is not to be bummed when people get induced, get an epidural, or have to go back to the OR for a c/s (ok if it isn’t planned I will be just as bummed as you and question what I could’ve done differently)…but my job IS to educate them on the benefits and risks of X intervention and support whatever THEY choose to do. Which is something you should REALLY look for in a provider💚

March was a lot of fun: long labors, short labors, good playlists, new friends, healthy babies☺️

International Day of the Midwife✨🩺

2026’s theme is “One Million More Midwives” and I couldn’t love that more. Focusing on addressing the global shortage of skilled midwives to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, it highlights the urgent need to strengthen the midwifery workforce.

If you would like midwifery care in Buffalo, Mercy Hospital and Sisters Hospital have midwives. If you would like an out of hospital provider, we have a homebirth midwife Natalia Caraballo and a birth center midwife Maura Winkler.

In my personal opinion, everyone should have midwifery care unless there is a medical reason to see an obstetrician for a high risk pregnancy. I thoroughly enjoyed the bodily autonomy, length of appointments, and individualized care I received by switching to a midwife. I figure I got at least another half of my life to live… maybe one day I’ll be another option in Buffalo🤣💚

Can you tell which way baby was facing??

An asynclitic birth occurs when a baby’s head enters the pelvis tilted to the side (ear toward shoulder) rather than straight. While common in early labor, persistent asynclitism can cause labor to stall, requiring frequent position changes, assisted delivery, or a cesarean section.

Some signs that baby is asynclitic are also the same signs of an occiput posterior (OP) also known as sunny side up baby.
•A prolonged second stage of labor (yes, this was a labor marathon mom!)
•Irregular contractions (not super powerful- her pitocin was up to 30 and they weren’t painful!)
•Laternal pain or pressure on only one side of the hips or pelvis.

An Occiput Posterior (OP) or “sunny-side up” baby is positioned head down but facing the mother’s front, rather than the back, which can cause longer, more painful “back labor”. While many rotate to the optimal position (anterior) on their own, 5-8% remain OP at birth, often requiring more active labor management, specialized pelvic movement, or increased interventions.

Most times, an OP or asynclitic baby needs an assisted delivery with vacuum or forceps, or even a cesarean section. This baby loved labor, was always happy as a clam, and moms pushes moved baby down each time so none of that was needed.

In the photos, you can see the head molding and how baby navigated through the pelvis! Baby was asynclitic AND sunny side up! The indent and redness on her forehead show where her head hung out on mom’s p***c bone. The head molding is more towards the top front of the head instead of the back. Head molding is typical in all vaginal births. It’s always fun to guess which way baby decided to come, but really cool to know for sure when they come out looking right up at you! Thank goodness for a supportive provider, a happy baby, and a superwoman mom!

Postpartum Visits

Within a week of you being home, I like to swing by and offer any support I can… whether that be hanging with your older kiddos, loving on your dog, or helping you do dishes.

The most important thing about the initial postpartum visit is processing your birth. The physical and the emotional. How do you feel about it? What questions do you have? Let’s unpack it and help you understand anything you want to talk about. I’ll share my birth notes with you if you have questions about what time certain things happened at. This is very important for all moms. A lot happened in a short, or long, amount of time and it’s important that you talk about it. “It’s okay to mourn the loss of the birth you hoped for.” And it’s also okay to feel confused if your birth happened really fast and your brain hasn’t caught up yet. Every birth is different and every mom is different. I’m not there to hold the baby, but I absolutely will if you want me to🥹🥰

If you have a Medicaid or Essential plan, you have 8 appointments (any combination of prenatal/ postpartum) covered by insurance, and they can be used anytime within the 12 months after birth, regardless of birth outcome. Moms need support even though our social media culture may tell you that you should be able to do it all on your own.

If insurance doesn’t cover doula services, my clients still have me in their back pocket if needed. Sometimes you just need an adult conversation or an unbiased ear that isn’t a friend or family member to bounce things off of. I got you.
