The plants are calling you...

They have a rich and diverse vocabulary and speak in many tongues. For the scientist the plant may speak in the complex language of chemicals and isolates; to the medicine person they speak in the multiversed language of healing; to the poet, they speak of beauty.

No matter what language you speak or comprehend, the plants will converse in a manner that you can understand, though it may take a listening ear and an open heart to hear them. Through their color, scent, medicine power, and beauty they seduce and entice us into the realm of our senses where we hear best their subtle language.

Many people, when they first begin working with plants, don’t recognize the language that plants use. They are listening for familiar words. But words are only one method of communication and, as most people discover, they are not always the best way to convey feelings or thoughts.

Ask anyone who has dug their hands deep in the dirt, planted seeds, harvested medicine, and taken time simply to get to know plants on their own turf, and they will tell you that plants communicate clearly if we but choose to listen.

Montana lentil farmers go against the grain to build thriving organic business

Timeless Seeds’s “lentil underground” continues to grow, producing nutrient-dense specialty crops while regenerating Montana’s soils and rural communities David Oien doesn’t seem like a renegade. He’s a friendly, down-to-earth, third-generation Montana farmer. But David and his fellow fa...

Every cooking oil has a unique composition that makes it better at some things than others. Oil not only prevents our culinary masterpieces from sticking to a pan, it also affects the final flavor, consistency, texture, and nutritional content of your dishes.

This is why one oil might be amazing in a salad dressing or for a lightly sautéed protein, but is a poor choice for grilling or deep-frying.

Find our guide to culinary oils which includes a handy cooking oil smoke point chart here: https://mrh.life/CulinaryOilGuide

A new, first-of-its-kind study finds farms using practices that promote soil health produce healthier food than conventional farms. The study, published in the journal PeerJ, offers what researchers are calling preliminary work, showing the relationship between soil-friendly regenerative practices and the nutrient content of food produced in that soil. David Montgomery, lead author of the study and a professor of earth and space sciences at the University of Washington, says this is the first study that shows how soil condition impacts what crops contain. “The biology of the soil was really the part that got overlooked in moving to chemistry-intensive farming,” he says. “It may be that one of our biggest levers for trying to combat the modern public health epidemic of chronic diseases is to rethink our diet, and not just what we eat, but how we grow it.”

They found crops from regenerative agriculture farms on average had 34 percent more vitamin K, 15 percent more vitamin E, 14 percent more vitamin B1, 17 percent more vitamin B2, 11 percent more calcium, 16 percent more phosphorus and 27 percent more copper. For phytochemicals, there was a range of 15 to 22 percent more in regeneratively farmed foods, depending on the type of compound. Results were just as promising for specific nutrients in beef and pork. Beef from the regenerative farm overall had three times more omega-3 fats but more than six times the amount of alpha linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 acid. Pork produced from the regenerative farm also had more omega-3 fatty acids: 11 times as much alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and two times as much eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), compared to conventional products.

More research needs to be done. But we're pretty certain that true regenerative organic and biodynamic farming is the way we start making our population and the environment healthier. Bon appétit to a future without GMOs, synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and factory farmed junk!

This is amazing. The sweet taste of the carrots and addition of chick peas make a perfect addition to a lunch or dinner meal. I used the box grater and it was a little time consuming but worth the effort. Make sure that everything you purchase is fresh and organic. I used chives and myer lemons.

Have you had a French carrot salad before?🥕🥕 Carrot salads are ubiquitous in France and we’ve been missing out. It's a delicate balance of sweet raw carrot, tangy lemon juice, olive oil, Dijon mustard and herbs. Chickpeas are optional but recommended. This salad is a lovely side dish to offer at picnics, in packed lunches, with sandwiches, and so on. 🙌

Enjoy this cheerful avocado and blood orange salad. 🌈🥑 🍊 You could call it a wintertime version of my favorite avocado salad. It’s bold and bright, and almost looks more like abstract art than food. That is, until you take a bite, and fall in love. It’s loaded with delicious fresh, seasonal flavors and makes a statement on the dinner table.✨✨

Yummy veggie breakfast.

This healthy breakfast casserole is the perfect addition to a holiday breakfast spread. 🙌 I loaded this one up with fresh veggies and greens, including red bell pepper, green onion and spinach. Since it offers some protein and vegetables, it’s a great way to help balance those delicious carb-heavy treats, like muffins and pancakes. I’d be thrilled to find this option alongside bagels and cream cheese. Leftovers are good for lunch, too. 🎉🎉

Quinoa salads can be both super nutritious and delicious, and this one is definitely both.💃🏻✨ I added chickpeas for additional protein and nutrients. I added loads of fresh flavor to the quinoa-chickpea base with spinach, parsley, cilantro and green onion. The salad wasn’t quite awesome enough until I added freshly toasted pepitas and some creamy, crumbled feta cheese. Then I poured in a zippy, garlicky, lemony dressing made lightly creamy with some tahini. Leftovers are great for lunch! 🙌
